not unless you damage t/box input seal refitting ,check 2 x dowel are in as can stay with either box and any more than 2 is problem,removing hand brake assembly helps as does putting diff lock and low first,dont seal between the 2, fine adjustment made on high/low linkage nuts near t/box
 
feck sake, the rear prop bolted to the back of the handbrake drum, bolts keep turning, iassume the drum needs to be removed in situ to gain access to the bolt heads on the inside of the drum?
 
you cant do that get sharp chisel split nut on side in line with stud it works easier than you would think

And also realised the one I was gonna fit was more worn than the one I got ...

I did think you couldn't remove it as it's bolted through the 30mm nut behind the prop. Will give it a go with what you say

Off a disco 1.222 28D model number, bought it from grubby over the weekend.

As i've got to go out tomorrow and buy a 30mm socket i'll give this xfer box a good look over.
 
i thought prop nuts where turning with bolt ,if so split nut,i do them regulary as prop off for alot of jobs
 
Check the handbrake mount as the disco one I have is mounted slightly different , have to drill and tap the tranny to fit your hand brake cable mount ( drum side ) . Just didnt want you to find out when its all in there and then go ahhh f**k it .... :D
 
What do you mean by splitting the nut mate?

Wedge something between the nut and drum case to provide pressure on the bolt?

Another thing whilst i'm fiddling about underneath, i've released the bolts holding the diff casing on as it's got alot of play in it and i may as well have a nosey about, but it wont come off. i read i need to spread the axle casing, is this true? If so is it something i can do in me garage?

Well it wouldn't be a Landy without a customary ' ahh fook it ' moment :lol:

This is possibly true given my box came from a Disco ( i believe the defenders didn't have this xfer box number ) so looks like a trip back to halfrauds tomorrow to pick up a decent tap set & a 30mm socket...
 
prop nuts if stuck as any nut easily with sharp chisel ,middle of flat,with chisel blade inline with bolt it will split nut then undo with fingers,in my apprenticeship back in the eighties they gave me 12 tractor wheel nuts to split after a couple it gets easy ,also dosent damage thread diff housing nuts x 10 same as prop nut i presume diff wont come out till half shafts pulled back a bit out of diff ,also will usualy need prying out evenly catches on studs
 
you wont need 30mm socket unless you are doing rear output seal brake comes off with output flange in place,you do either have to tap 2 x 8mm holes to hold hand brake bracket at rear as disco has them on side or you can leave disco bracket in place and swap cable

cheers james, got them off :D

As for the diff, i'll have to drop it off the ramps and axle stand it to get the half shafts out abit, i'll that tomorrow.

From what i can see i have 2 cross head bolts holding on the handbrake drum.
 
Cheers Steve, will get that sorted if needed, just checking the handbrake mounting is still on the xfer box, so looks like i just have to connect up at the handle end....
