Lol!
I have reread your post several times and looked at the sites you proposed and I'm still convinced that the only correct oil to go in an R380 gearbox is MTF94.
I checked the various search engines and none of them listed, to my satisfaction, UK market specs, Discovery TDi 300 specifically as opposed to a combo of 200 & 300, so no, I do not accept that I was wrong.
I have my opinion and and happy with it and it would appear that LR, the vehicle manufacturers, agree with my stand.
I have nothing more to add.
thats fair enough big lad
however, the info on those sites only comes from Land Rover, the vehicle manufacturer. It's collected by a company called OATS and it's absolutely up to date and accurate.
i think the reason the 200 and 300 tdi's are listed together is that they are the same car and take the same spec and grade oil in most cases
lets face it, by the time people like me and you get their hands on a land rover the damage has already been done by the skin flint previous owners that haven't serviced it properly. Whether you go for MTF94 or ATF it will certainly be an improvement on what was in it.
I was always under the impression that its dexron II in the LT77 and the mtf94 in the R380.I've got dexron II in my transfer box though.
Oh God ... so what oil should I pour into my TD5 Disco May 2004 manual gearbox when I change it?

If you want to use Castrol oil then look at their web site. Their oil for your gearbox is Castrol SMX-S a fully synthetic manual gear oil 75w-85. http://www.castrol.com/castrol/iframe.do?categoryId=9024084&contentId=7044829
So, not ATF then?![]()
O yes dave, that's for the TD5 manual and for the 200/300 manual guess what, the same oil.
I'm not going to trawl the other oil companies sites but they may or not have the same recommendations.
MTF94 is what you get if you buy Texeco's oil but I'm sure you know that.![]()
it says on castrol website
Manual Transmission SMX-S (k) 2.7 (f,g)
k. Manual Transmission, <MY 1994, TQ-D
f. Transfer box LT 230/230Q: 2.3 ltr, Syntrax Universal. Models prior to Jan 98, Syntrax Universal
g. Manual gearbox: R380 gearbox 1994 model year to Jan 98, 2.4 ltr / 2.9 ltr (without/with oil cooler), TQ-D
TQ-D is ATF oil
SMX-S is castrols MTF94 oil
so CharlesY is 100% MTF94 in his R380
but if you have an R380 box older that jan 1998 then ATF is the one
they do know the difference between the various gearboxes but you have to read the guide correctly
As long as I'm OK to use MTF 94 in my TD5 R380 gearbox that'll do for me.
Thanks.
