Hi, I have just picked up a 2.5 turbo engine (old style not 200TDI) FOC

Which I have been told had a problem on the bottom end, but was running when it was replaced with a 200TDI.

My 90 just has the 2.5NA engine and ive been told that the head and turbo will go straight on just need to modify the exhaust down pipe(which I have aswell)
I was just wondering if its worth doing or will it cause more hassle than its worth?
as someone else told me id need different pistons.
So can I get some answers from all you mega experinced folk out there please,:D:D

so essentially you want to convert your 12j (2.5NA) into a 19j (2.5Turbo) it is possible but the head wasn`t designed for the extra pressure anmd heat generated by the turbo... this is why they fail and are much maligned engines... the venerable old 12j on the other hand is rock solid and will go pretty much forever with reasonable maintenance... if i were you i would keep running my 12j until a 200tdi came up and then convert to that....
good luck whatever you do.

You will melt the pistons, They are different than the NA ones as they are harder. As far as im aware the heads are the same so you could put the head/manifold etc straight on but the piston would be destroyed. It was very common problem with the 19j engine (cracked pistions)

Ok, thanks for the quick response, I was planning at fitting a 200 at some point, I was just wondering if it was worth modding the one ive got but i think ill proberly just use it for spares:D:D

i had the 19j eninge in my old 110csw the first engine cracked 3 pistons and had to much back pressure as a result, I replaced that one and about 4 years later the replacement went the same way this time 2 cracked pistons it is a very common problem. I was gonna put a disco engine in it but by the time i was gonna buy the engine, the turbo.intercooler hoses etc from steve parker, then i still had to fab an exaust and figure out the best place for the air box i decided against it. so i traded the 110csw in against a 300TDI 90, And if i ever get major probs with this engine it is a straight swap for a disco or defender engine less hassel

Someone told me that some of the 300TDI's are a bit soft, and the 200TDI was a better engine more robust? I had a 200 and a 300 in Disco's and I must admit neither gave me any problems,

thats bollocks basically same engine but 300 better design ,share the same bore, piston ,crank brg size as 2,25 petrol ,300 only fault was that rad filled and emptied on same side so was prone to over heating

My well serviced hard worked 19j did 126000 thousand miles before starting to run rough, took head off to find all 4 pistons cracked two of them all the way acros, still going though.[200 went in]Ithink any 19j still in good order would benefit from having an intercooler fitted to keep the incoming charge air temp down to help save the pistons.
