Hi, replaced engine in my diesel p38, had to use my fip ( that has been reconned along with injectors), retimed every thing up,set fip using dial gauge etc, bleed clear pipe from filter to pump , cracked pipes to tops of injectors getting some diesel there but still wont start, even tried using quick shot of easy start but nothing, any ideas, or is there anyone near me that might care to help, live in Castleford west yorks.

If you timed it properly with engine locked at TDC number one firing and your lift pump is working it should fire. Did you check that the glow plugs were sound on the new engine? To get good flow from open injectors crank only when glow lamp is on (lift pump running). When you get good flow nip injectors up. Two applications of glow lamps then crank. If glow plugs are duff you will struggle.

NEVER use easy start unless you want to blow your turbo. Need more than "won't start". Will it crank (I'm guessing by leaking diesel it will) - you will need to bleed the rail to get the correct pressure for injectors to work. Stutter? Or just dead?

No rail on a P38.

Thanks - Fip to inj. will still need bleeding though - haven't worked on DSE p38 :)

Hi, thanks guys , nope didnt check glow plugs but will do that when it stops raining, bleed tops of injectors by turning engine over, will try Wammers method, again thanks for help.

You can also run a jump from terminal 5 on pump relay (relay 12) remove relay and push a wire into the terminal that is opposite orientated to the other three then connect to battery positive. That will run the pump whilst you crank.

Hi Guys, went and changed glow plugs. it coughed and wont start again so checked timing its lost it all again,, my question is what am I doing wrong ( apart from keeping this pile of *hite) are there any bolts that need thread locking once I restet the timing, cheers.

Can't lose the timing unless it is jumping the crank sprocket in which case you have big problems.

No, chains and sprockets. Hope you have the tools to do it. Crank sprockets are like hens teeth.

will the sprockets of the BMW m51 engine be the same or is that rockin horse manure as well??

Possibly. After all they are the same sprockets. No problem with pump sprocket or cam sprocket but crank sprockets are hard to come by it would seem. I could not get one when i did mine but fortunately it was ok. The BMW part number is 11 21 2 243 401.

No idea but people sometimes do odd things and it is page 7 of the thread before anyone finds out and says: well if you'd only mentioned that ...

This is true of course. Some fault descriptions and details do leave a lot to be desired.;);)

Has the woodruf key fallen out of the pump shaft?

He is going to come back with "What woodruff key" i can see it now. With crank locked at TDC number one firing the woodruff key position in the pump sprocket should be uppermost or near as damn it. It should not be able to fall out. ;)
