Hi Cap Crap

I'll be taking my front bumper off soon to fit my A bar, and when I put it back, I want it to be straight!! I tried sorting this once before by removing it and wedging something in one end before refitting the bolts. A shortcut, but it worked a bit. Any tips on how to do it properly?

Straight.... up on one side or protruding out? I am guessing up on one side.... and the obvious is to pack it with washers or spacers between the underside of the bumper to lift it. Depending on how much out it is. The problem with that could be your A bar may be more difficult to fit as it will be higher than it should..... when you come to fit the A bar you may have to pack the bolts nearest the grill to bring it forward. If you are fitting Wipac spots or similar make sure you have them ready as it will be a tight fit. Remember that taking your grill off may require you to take the A frame off. Never a straight job :)

can you not put a block of wood under it and jack it up to bend it back up.
 
Mr JC - will take another look at packing it out when I fit the A bar. Not sure whether I will fit spot lights.

If packing it out isn't enough I'll jack it up and bend it! Love it lol.
 
Why has it dropped, is it bent or Britpart bumper or a twisted front chassis. if you know the cause will help with the remedy
 
i would guess that it hasnt dropped, but that the other side has been jacked up incorrectly through the jacking hole on that chassis leg ( or perhaps it was jacked up and the vehicle rolled back bending the chassisup at that point)... either way i reckon bending up the other side to suit might be harder than you think :/

The bumpers are made of tin foil you could bend it up by hand.
 
it'll bend back up with a bit of persuasion.
The chassis wouldn't have bent just by incorrectly jacking it unless it has some serious rust issues!!
 
Is that a private plate?

It's a td5 so should have any major chassis rust, factory bumpers are crap, someone bent mine on a 2x2 post
 
Just a thought but are you sure that it is the bumper that isn't straight and not the panelwork? There is a fair bit of adjustment on the panelwork and it is quite possible that it has been bolted together out of line. Another possibility is that both the bodywork AND the bumper are out of line making it look worse than it really is.

I speak from experience here.
My old 90 actually had a (slightly) twisted front chassis leg and while I wasn't too bothered about the look, it was the work of only an hour or so to drop the panelwork on the affected side to make it look more or less straight.

i seen td5 chassis with serious end of life rust after just 5 years...:eek:

That's surprising, my 53 plate was used for launching boats by the first owner :doh: the doors are fecked but the chassis is good

oh that is a suprise....

the td5 chassis was so bad the factory would sell all the not quite right ones to be reworked and galvoed for aftermarket companies..:eek:

as for the doors and handles ...........i stand by my flush fit handles as they work....:)

I shall be getting a full set of 4 brand new doors to rectify that isue
