Right i've just brought a roof mounted lightbar and was woundering how everyone else has traced the wires upto it? and if possible help on wireing it in would be good :D i want it to run off the high beam but i want a switch so i can turn the top lights off if i want to, i know it has to go through a relay but thats as much as i know :)
and where is the best place to mount the relay?

Thanks :) what's the best way to get the wire upto the roof? or am i going to have to drill a hole in the roof? it's a disco 1 300 TDI :) it's not showing my sig for unknown reasons
 
Most people come out by the windscreen scuttlepanel and go up the side of the snorkel, if you dont have a snorkel then its going to be "difficult" to do neatly tbh.

For wiring, I personally would use 2 relays, one per pair of lights, that way if a fuse goes then you have atleast the inner or outer pair of lights still working.

What wattage lights are you fitting ?

Totally unsure, what wattage would you reccomend? i have 4 of These for now but eventually i'll just have driving lights on the outside and long range lights on the inside one day but that'll be when i have more money :)
 
They will be standard 55watt bulbs, so will need a 10 amp fuse per "pair", 1 x 30amp relay will supply both no probs, or use 2 x 20AMP relays ( my recommendation) 1 per pair.

If you used "fused" relays which are a little more expensive, they remove the need for "messy" inline fuses.
 
well if i use 2 relays that will make it easier for when it comes to fitting the second set of lights because the wireing will already be there. where would i get these fused relays from?
 
You can run your power feed straight up the side of the windscreen - 6mm tri-rate cable pushes into the rubber gutter nicely and with a bit of silicone behind it stays there too!
 
before i got my snorkel (still to be fitted) i thought of several ways of running the cables up to the roof.
first thought was to drill a hole in the roof, and use a waterproof connector of some sorts, so that the bar could be unplugged and removed if required, or another light could be plugged in for spotting/work lamp etc....

wasn't keen on this idea, so next one was to get some plastic trunking from B&Q, stick it to the screen pillar, and run the cables up the inside. The black tube type trunking would be better, as it can be fixed to the pillar with P clips, run down to the scuttle trim, and the cables run through the trim into the engine bay.
 
For my light bar (which has 2 round lamps atm, which actually looks nice), I ran the cable up the side of the windscreen under the trim then drilled a hole in the roof under the gutter, silicolned that, then ran straight into the light bar, I also used a spade connector on the there so I can just remove the bar easily by unplugging it, no hassle.
 
thanks for all the great ideas :) i shall see what i can do, i'm looking to get a snorkle at somepoint so ima run it up the n/s of the screen. i hope everyone has a great christmas
 
Single core tri-rated is what i used for mine - 4mm is good for 400W and if you only use one 40A relay you only need to get one core of this up to the roof and it fits in to the gulley at the side of the windscreen lovely!
 
tri-rated? i was going to have 3 wires running up so that 1 would be for one set of lights and one would be for the other then i'd use the 3rd as an earth so i wouldnt have any earthing problems

No need for earth, just clean the paint from the bolt holes where you fix the bar to the gutters - same for earth points on each light...

If you're running two circuits 200W = 18A so you can use 1.5mm, you might be able to fit two of these into the gulley - if not run one up either side
 
tuck the cable thru the wing to the door pillar, then tuck it into door rubber then come out at the top by where you have drilled the holes in the gutter for light bar drill an extra hole and push cable thru that wires can be hid behind the light bar leg??? does that make sense?
 
fair enough, i just thought that if i wired an earth it'd save me having to scrape paint off things and rust proof them after, and if it were to be wired in one colour i'd tag the cables :D
