my dad has a warn winch and he had new solinoids put in not that long ago, he has a problem with the winch and it wont pull in, it will push the wire out, he tried a different controller and says that the solinoid is clicking when he pushes the button, has anyone got any idea what it could be please

sounds like the solonoid again. Something is not making contact. try tapping the individual solonoids with a hammer. 2 will be for winch in and 2 for winch out. you could try swapping them around to find the rouge unit. check all the wires to and from each connection to. once you get your head around the way they work these are very very simple units.

My winch did exactly this. Due to wading and not keeping my winch clean the brushes and all terminals were knaff corroded up. I used electrical cleaner and reassembled my winch with some grease on the bearings and some motor cleaner for the armture and electrical cleaner for all terminals and a very small dob of grease on each one.

Yep. As already stated by Griff and Jai it sounds like a loose/dirty/corroded connection or sticky solenoid.
Clean and grease the terminals (I use copper grease) and if that doesn't work tap the solenoid with a hammer.
What type of solenoid/s are on the winch?
Is it twin cylinder types or a single block (albright) type solenoid?

If it was repaired by Winch Repairs in Liskeard then in all fairness Phil died in August last year - easy long enough for an 'lectric bumper ornament to seize up.

I really would check the terminals again and if found to be good try operating the winch with the controls and give it a short hard tap with a mallet directly to the motor while operating the solonoid only do this a couple of times and not too hard as to damage anything. Mine needed a few taps to work when we did the last greenlane rescue due to having corroded brushes/armature and generally coated in ****e because of wading/moisture and dust. If this works then a strip down is required or some good directional spray with motor cleaner but I doubt you will without a strip down.
