The oil will probably be slightly thicker when the engine is up to temperature, so could reduce fuel consumption slightly. Some engines are a bit temperamental about engine oils though so sadly can't say if the TD5 will operate.

In my Defender TD5 owners handbook they recommend 5W/30, 5W/40, and 5W/50 to meet ACEA A1 98 & B1 98
I use Halfords 5W/40 in mine possibly it creates a little more resistance and higher fuel consumption but its so small I don't notice.
And I think its quieter with 5W/40 than 5W/30

They seem to do it one or twice a year, its great value, if you go on their web site and download the safety data sheet for the oil it gives you a strong clue to who makes this product.

Yup, good old Comma. I try and stock up when it's reduced because if I wait 'til a service is due I end up paying loads. Things are so different from when I was a lad - I seem to remember that books, paint and motor oil, as well as insurance were more or less pocket money prices.

I honestly don't know but I bet someone on here will have the experience to answer, these days I try to stick with 100% synthetic oils I think they have made giant leaps in the technology, probably helps modern engines doing massive mileage,
I'm old enough to remember engines that were knackered at 60k and needed things like decokes and bottom end re builds

Yeah your probably right its just i can get 20/50 easier than i can get 15/40's here to the point i made a mistake last year in buying the 15/40's for petrol / diesel, i know it wouldn't have done any harm but i didn't realise till i was pouring it out into my jug when giving it a service

I use 10w40 dino oil in my TD5 engines and change it every 5k miles with filters. It does not get cold enough or hot enough here to require anything else. Never had a problem and you can get it cheap if you know where to look. Got 200 litres of Castrol GTX at a receivers sale for £50 a few years ago and still have enough left for a few years yet. I also have another sealed 200 litre drum of Comma 10w40 that I recently paid £30 for when they cleared out my local P.O. sorting office before redeveloping it for housing. The demolition contractors had a good breakfast that day. I can only assume it was for topping up the delivery vans but they wanted shot of it so every one was a winner.
