i couldnt get my left hand headlight to work on dipped atall no matter what i tried.but having one more go tonight strange things have happend..when i put side lights on the main headlights come on dimmly and both now not just one..the flash on the stalk doesnt work but if you push it away for main beam they work,is this likely to be a wiring problem or could it be the stalk on the column

Sounds like a bad earth to me. Had a similar problem. Did fix it, but not very scientifically, so I have no idea where the bad earth actually was.

It sounds like its the stalk but it could well be an earthing problem somewhere if the lights are dim.

sidelights are fine and the main ligths are only dim when the sidelights are on,when you switch on the dipped they are fine but the main beam flash still dont work

The headlights are supposed to come on dimly when the sidelights are on (if the engine's running - they will go out when it's off but just the sidelights stay on). The no-flash sounds like a stalk switch problem...(but could be anytihing, he says unhelpfully!!!)

The sidelights headlight is far dimmer than dipped beam headlights.

ahhhhh...didnt realise the dipped came on dimmly with sidelights as when i was testing lights i had ignition on but engine not runnin,it was only when i came back from jet wash with engine still runnin i noticed the main lights on
sounds like the stalk or the black wire i will try first

This assumes you have the dim/dip system fitted - neither of mine have.

Or at least it didn't work.

Check your earths first - easy to do.

??? Does that mean your headlights don't dip or you have no full beam?

The headlight switch has 3 positions, off, sidelights and main headlights. With sidelights, when the ignition is on you get dim headlights too (but still reasonably bright) ...then push the switch forward and you get the headlights, which are controllable with the main stalk, back for flash (on a spring), middle for dipped and forward for full beam. I think you just get sidelights on all settings with the ignition off?

With both of mine, first position gives sidelights only, regardless of ignition. Then, when you push it all the way on you get headlights(dip beam), then main on the stalk.
