I have a 1971 series 3. At present all vehicles made before Aygust 1970 are tax exempt as they are 40+ years old.
Therefore, will my Landy become tax exempt in August 2012?
I have looked at the DVLA website but I can't find clarification.

everything from 1/1/73 back is exempt…...

As long as it is genuinely a series 3 from 1971 - with "original" chassis, axles, engine and gearbox. Original in this case means the parts can have been replaced but only like for like and if the chassis has been replaced it must be with a new one straight from the manufacturer. Coil sprung conversions and non standard engines may mean it has to be reclassified with a Q plate. After all, it's supposed to be a historic vehicle.

So will everything from 01/01/74 be exempt as of next week?
Is that how it works or is it a set day and that's it.
Turns out mine was registered in August 1773 so therefore not exempt at the moment.

No……..its not a rolling exemption anymore

1/1/73 is the cutoff

Check for the build date on your landy not the registered date

No as the cut off is permanent so it doesn't change year by year. And 1773...is it wooden?

Yeh, Ken Clarke was chancellor and a car buff, made 25 year old cars tax exempt, but then lost the election, new chancellor, exemption fixed at that point. 1/1/72.
Think the new chancellor will re-instate it? Don't hold your breath.

i hope it does get changed / reinstated to rolling 30 years so much so ive voted for it on that poll thingy online

ive had loads of old vehicles in the past and none of them have ever been tax exempt because of the 1973 shut off bollocks

think about the way they build cars nowadays its a throw away society we live in they just dont build them to last nowadays like its near fookin impossible to find a decent austin metro or montego nowadays as theyve all gone not built to last

but on the other hand you can still find half decent cortinas and granadas both of wich ive had both id love to have kept but i couldnt afford the tax on that and a runaround

now im trying to get an early series 3 hopefully the goverment see sense and remove the fixed tax exemption date

anyone who has owned a 30+ yr old car damn well knows it should be tax exempt due to the cost of keeping the bugger in decent order and roadworthy anyway

just cut us a brake thats all we ask
