So... i've been searching and there's a wealth of information out there... only trouble is, I'm unable to put the right bits of it together into some useful information specifically for my vehicle, so here goes...

I have a Disco 1. It's had a 2" lift and has standard length rock sliders. I have not done the "camel cut", but have standard Land Rover alloys wheels with 245/75R16 tyres.

At some point I'm going to need some new tyres, so when I do, what is the widest/largest I can fit to the standard LR alloys wheels without having to buy extra stuff?

Doing the camel cut should be fine, and adjusting things is fine, but I don't want to have to fork out for wheel spacers or new wheels particularly... unless I can sell the alloys for more than the cost of a set of offset steels ......and if that's the case what would you recommend??

...and yes, i've found redhand's sticky post ( http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/what-tires-can-i-put-my-disco-43706.html ), but it doesn't talk about standard LR alloys vs offset steels vs standard steels etc... so it's all very confusing in this instance.

offset will have no affect on the size of tyre to be fitted as bump stops can be adjusted

OK, so the size of the tyre as per Disco Tire Fitting Guide is what I really care about, right?

Nothing else matters... can I fit any width of tyre onto the standard LR alloy wheels then?

What is the point of offset wheels? Are they just an alternative to wheel spacers to give you a wider track regardless of tyre size?

a wider offset will mean you dont have to adjust your stops as much/if atall

no you cant fit any width of tyre onto a standard rim you need to see what markings are on the rim and then the tyre manufacturer will tell you the widest tyre you can fit onto it

if you have a freestyle type alloy im sure 235/85/16 or 265/75/16 will fit

Mine has a 2" lift and I put 265/75/16 on with no probs. All I had to do was adjust the steering stops so the tyres didn't rub on the radius arms on full lock, trim the front valance(took about an inch off) and a camel cut on the back arches.

The tyres are very close to the arches on full articulation but don't rub,so if you go bigger than 265's you might need to do a lot more modifications.
It's altered the gear ratio quite a bit aswell so i reckon if you go for bigger than 265's you might need a defender transferbox as it would be too high geared.

Interesting...

Several people have also told me a lot of tyres come with steel wheels included... this might be the way forward. I could then sell the alloys to hopefully make some of my money back!

I guess I could then just speak to the tyre supplier and ask them whether they'd fit my disco! You'd hope they would know, at least...

Think about riding up a hill on a mountain bike. Now think of the same journey but on a penny farthing.

Mine is fine with 315/70/17s (34.5) but it is an auto.

Because the tyres have a larger diameter it makes it higher geared,in theory you should get a higher top end speed if you have the power to get it there but will suffer in acceleration.
