Hi,

I have owned a Landrover 110 TD5 since 2003, when it was purchased new. It has been a great vehicle, I have done lots of miles and lots of towing with it. Not to mention snow etc.

The last couple of days it has been making a whistling/screeching noise. It sounds like the noise may be comming from the turbo. It only happens when the vehicle is under load, for instance accelerating and running up through the gears. At tickover no noise, if the engine is revved when stationary no noise, unless the engine is revved extremely hard.
There appears to be no loss of power.

Any ideas what might be causing this noise?

It's prob the exhaust manifold
Take off the plastic top cover and look at either end where it mounts the head
There'll be soot
Usually expect to have to replace some studs too as they fail and snap
 
Trax, thanks. I checked the belts they seem ok. Well spotted though LOL "whinning" a sign I have been in France to long!

Galvernisednuts, Great! I will take off the plastic cover tomorrow and have a look. I will keep you posted.
 
Almost certain to be cylinder number 5 as manifold warped.
Get searching as theres a good mod you can do involving cutting the reinforcement webs out allowing the thing to move in service, I also drilled all the mounting holes slightly oversize apart from two, again so it can shuffle around in service, the 2 left make sure the ports line up when refitting.
I also used renault ex manifold nuts as they had a built in floating washer.
Then get it machined flat and helicoil the studs that have pulled out.
Pics show how bad manifold warps and in engine shot you can see webbing cut out and floating type nuts

And crack turbos, cause head to get so hot core plugs leak, was always no5 on mine until I modded it.
Pics proper cracks and essential piece of kit on any tuned td5

Well Gents,

Spot on!! Number 5 it is assuming number 5 is the closest to the bulkhead. I have attached a picture. The bottom stud is the furthest to the right on the picture. I can feel it is loose. Ican not turn it with my fingers but I can feel it moving in and out.

Now the series of questions.

1) As I live at the end of a valley in the Ariège next port of call Andorra!! It would probably be easiest to purchase a new manifold. Any recommendations where I could purchase this? ( With a delivery service of course.)
2) I am assuming the stud has either broken or ripped out. If broken any suggestions for getting the stud out? My experience with stud extractors is a bit hit and miss.
3) In the case where the stud has ripped out and a helicoil needs to be fitted. Can this only be done professionally?
4) Can the vehicule still be used while I am waiting for the pièces? Or is that likely to cause more damage?

The stud will have sheared but anticipate loosening the others with care in case others fail
I used to replace the studs at either end as they're usually fatigued
It's always hit and miss with a bit of luck but centre pop the snapped stud and drill a pilot and try a good quality extractor that's always worked par once when I needed to dremel one out with a carbide bit

My studs always pulled the threads out, so just keep winding the nut onto the stud until it pulls free.
You can get drill guides especially for drilling centres of stud, I always do as Gavin said buts its can be bloody awkward to get it central.
Helicoils are a doddle to fit have a look on youtube bound to be a video on there.
Again helicoil kits are on ebay with all the tools you need
