I have a load whining noise when in 4th or 5th gear (lt77) in my 1990 90, am I right in thinking this is gear box cos it only happens in 4th and 5th?

If it whines at 30mph in 4/5th but doesnt whine at 30mph in 3rd..i'd say yes.

Hiya storm, yes mate that's exactly it - no whine at 30 in 3rd but does in 4th and 5th!
Can I fix this cheaper than buying a recon mate?

If you have a hoist and are competent than rebuild it yourself, cheap for bits. However its a gearbox out job, obviously, so a garage you're looking at at least 6 hours labour...so thats £400 at least.

I'd look around for a good box on here or on ebay (£100-£150) and just do a swap. JamesMartin (member here) may be able to help with a box.

Cheers storm. I'll pm him. I'm doing a tdi conversion as soon as weather warms up and I'm gonna put the transfer box in with the tdi engine but keep my g ear box. So I think
I'll prob whip the gear box out then and either swap it like you say or recon it myself ( with th e help of my mechanic friend &#58373 am I best using land rover bits or can you recommend any other good quality makes that are a bit cheaper?

Paddocks or Craddocks will sort you with all the bits you need to re-con it, give them a call, usually very helpful. Id pay for quality seeing as its a bugger getting the gearbox out when a part costing a few quid goes wrong. Good idea to use a disco transfer box with the lt77.

Thanks, ye I agree- you get what you pay for!
To be honest ill be sad to see my 19j go lol!
It's been great. I bought my disco tdi the same day I picked up my
Landy because I heard the 19j td were ****e. But mines been sound- I use it everyday for work, take it off road- shooting with the dogs in the back and use it most nights for personel use! It would be just my luck to fit the tdi and have loads of proplems with it hahah. Thanks again mate, I'm gonna price it up wid paddocks and craddocks tomoz

Hi mate my defender gearbox started to get really loud so i drained the oil out of it and put a tube of the gearbox quieting stuff in Molyslip along with new oil and now I can bearly hear it in any gear or any speed. May be worth a try as its cheap to do.
