Hi thanks for all your help so far. I have basically bought a Freelander that I love with knackered IRD and probably VCU which I will change as well. Car is 1.8 petrol 1997 I was wondered what the best year of IRD to get? I know the later ones have better ratios. One other thing I think all my exhaust nuts are rusted on do you guys just cut through them with an angle grinder and fit new ones? All help greatly appreciated.

I cut my exhausts buts off with an angle grinder and replaced them, with regards to the IRD google a company called bell engineering, they should be able to help you out. This is the best forum for landrovers you just have to be patient and be willing to take a little stick of the tratter boyz!

Thanks for that, thought it might provoke a response. Used to motorbike forums which are very different.

Disconnect the abs sensor don't try and remove it from the hub like the Haynes manual tells you to. I broke mine. Make sure you have some sort of levers for levering behind the drive shaft, if you have the facilities to drop the sub frame down then it makes getting it out a bit easier, saying that I did not drop the sub frame just unbolted the brackets and took the dampener off the top of the IRD and it squeezed through. Get an assistant, I did mine alone and I could have really done with some help, it's a heavy old lump of metal. Also be prepared for the normal seized and rusted bolts with rounded off heads, F ing and blinding, dropping the prop shaft on your head swallowing grease, oil, dust and engine coolant. loads of fun though!
