Now I've got my arches fitted and my winch bumper I need to start looking for a winch but the choice is bewildering, seems you can pay from £250 to £1000. Are they for different purposes? can anyone help narrow the choice?

, I am thinking you get what you pay for...max pulling load, electrical power draw and what sort of remote ect. As to the detail, each to there own,

You get what you pay for in terms of reliability. If you need it every day and need it to work faultlessly no matter what. Go for the 1000 quid options. If, like me, you only need it on the odd occasion you might get stuck and don't offload that often, then go for the 250 quid ones. And anything else from the range in between. If you've got the money, go for the more well known makes.
Which is why my mate runs a pto winch on his trial motor.
Had a warn xd9000i on an old motor, never needed it,
Got a champian sumert-or-other on this motor, and will probably never need it.
Winches are for people this no friends :lol:

Is this one any good?
whilst I can work out what the terms mean such as pulling load, line speed and remote type, I've no idea what a usual range is and where in that range I should be aiming, for instance at a casual glance as my Disco weighs 2 tonnes, add in maybe 500 kg load plus 500kg safety margin, a 3000kg winch should do by the above reasoning but I'v no idea whether that stands in practice.
reason I'd like a winch is that I'd be on my own often as not and feel it's sensible to get myself unstuck from wherever I might get myself stuck.
Picked at random I've found this winch on ebay. What are people's thoughts on it, and why?

That's exactly the winch I'm saving for. 13,000lbs of pull will get you out of most situations. And on the few occasions you might need it, should be fine

and an unbranded 13,000lb winch
if money was no object 8274
my current 13000lb front winch will begoing on the back of the disco and i will be replacing it with a superwinch or a warn whatever i can get the best price on
its been said time and time again you get what you pay for dont buy the cheapest chinese import u come accross ..wait a while and save up for the best you can afford,then throw the steel cable away and fit a plasma/dyneema rope,

This winch seems the better buy with its 10mm synthetic rope.
We've fitted one of those, not a bad piece of kit. the biggest thing with winches, is learning how to use them properly, and not abuse them.
The synthetic rope is by far better than a steel one. if you had a wire rope fitted to this type of winch, as you winch in, it will overlay itself far from perfect and knock the solenoid box off, the syntehetic rope, as well as all the other plus points, doesn't take up the same room on the drum.

the first thing to do with that winch is throw the solenoid box away and mount an albright solenoid behind your grill or in the engine bay dont matter where cos there waterproof
and there a lot more reliable
other than that they seem bloody good value ? its spares
can ya get bits ????
