I'm on the lookout for a tirfor...

Which one is the most suitable for recovering a disco?
What length of cable is best / against storage size?

Also looking for some horses mouth experience from someone who's used one as I never have...

Hard work I imagine!

I'm looking at a tirfor instead of any permanent mounted winch.
 
mine is a 3.2 tonner with 20m of cable.
it's fookin heavy!
wish I'd got a 1.6 tonner - that's enough for 99% of recoveries and less than half the size / weight.
20m of cable is plenty. if you can't get close enough, you can always extend using a strop and 20m of movement will get you out of most situations.

you could have put the poor thing on an old carpet tile to keep it clean - or is it just me that doesnt like cleaning them

After using lots of Firtors, Hobbs and sundries ( Yes the tree surgery ) I found just about any of them will pull my Landy out of ditches ect, I put my old Firtor in a large ammo box with a couple of flat strops, 2 shackles and a long 1" anchor rope n spade. Add two yards of 6mm angle iron an a sled hammer -if you can't get it out with that, burn it an claim on the insurance :( but seriously, it's simple just make your anchor the immovable object and yer there...........( and learn yer timber hitch / bowline-with a stick in it !)

And because a Chain is infinately adjustable without having to undo anything whilst your winching. A strap isn't. An hi-lift jack will only pull you for 4 or 5ft (depending on the length) If you use a strap when you've pulled the landy as far as the jack will allow you have to start tying knots in the strap or adding bits of rope to the tow rig. With a chain you just chock or tie off the landy unhook the chain and slide the hi-lift foot back to the bottom of the jack and hook the chain back on, and keep repeating till you've recovered yourself.

Why isn't the obvious so obvious, till yer stuck and wish yer had a chain I guess.
