Last year I got an advisory about the front shock bushes and I didn't do a lot about it TBH. Giving the back end a shove today it bounced up and down a few times before stopping so it's probably fair to say the original shocks are a bit tired, 90K miles on an 04, SLS but no ACE. I don't off road apart from the occasional track when I have too so I'm after something that's going to give me the smoothest ride on our crap roads.

I'm sure genuines are probably the way to go but I'd need a seriously good argument for them to SWMBO to justify the extra cost so after a quite a few searches I think I've narrowed the choice down to either Monroe or Terrafirma. Would welcome opinions on either or that good case for genuines.
 
They must be "a bit tired" if you get a result from a bounce test on a disco not something I've ever been able to do nor has the MOT man.
Monroe Black are the ones I would go for if I had to, their OEM so standard oil but with the additional splash of gas in them.
 
I have no experience of Disco 2 shocks but am in the same position and considering Bilstein. I was also thinking of Terrafirma, but hadn't considered Monroe - a decent quality shock nonetheless.

Other threads mention Bilsteins, Terrafirmas and Super Gaz and seem to give good reports on all. At a guess, I suspect they are all at least as good as OE and a damn sight cheaper.
 
Bilsteins, Terrafirma and Super Gaz tend to be a performance damper, I have Bilsteins HD on another car I own and they are 'firm' so I have avoid the manholes in the road now :D
 
Britpart do a gas-filled set for the D2, I've had a set on for nearly a year and they have been good.

I'd not seen those Super Gaz ones before, thanks for the link. So in general gas gives a better ride than oil or a firmer one, thinking on road and not off?

U have seen them but do u know anything about them. Perhaps if u do a search to get a better understanding the workings of a damper, compression, rebound rates etc and what the addition of the gas to the standard oil damper does, loads of info on the manufactures sites. :)

Hi,
I've used Terrafirma shocks & springs ( +2",medium)on all my Discos & found them spot on.
Got 265 mud tyres on all time due to work needs, spend a lot of time on building sites, and found suspension set up works well on road as well, hardly rolls which pleases wifey no end and has stopped her screaming everytime we go around roundabouts :)

better ride, most will as yours will be tired, mine doesn't go off road really, it's there if i need it, but won't go where a 7840 will,!

Britpart, Allmakes, Bearmach and others don't make the stuff, they buy it in and repackage with their trade name on the box.

The Super Gaz shock absorbers carry a 2-year 50000 mile warranty, which is better than you will get on replacement genuine Land Rover shock absorbers, and they are a competitive price.

I'd hazard a guess that these are made by Monroe, but not easy to tell.
