Hi guys.

New to this forum so sorry if such thread exists...

Looking at getting a discovery.

Was initially looking at a mid 90s 300tdi for around 1500 quid but my budget is fairly flexible and was thinking about looking at a newer disco with the td5 engine.

I want a capable off roader that I can use for pay and play sites and to go hunt down so local green lanes but I also want it to be able to do 120 miles on the motorway without it getting annoying.

I like the idea of how simple and easy to work on the old ones are but are the newer ones more complicated?

Which is better on fuel?

Which would be cheaper to run as a daily car?

Plans are a 2 inch lift, a few guards and some slightly larger tyres but nothing too extreme as I want it to be suitable for road use.

What are the pros and cons of each one in terms of running costs, modifications, usability and parts cost?

Any help with the decision making process would be appreciated as I have jut sold my car and had about a week to select one.

I am in the midlands if anyone knows one for sale :)

Thanks in advance.

Matt

I would say a 300tdi is probably easier to modify for off roading but im not sure as i have never worked on a td5. If you intended to keep it for road use with only slightly bigger tyres I wouldn't bother to do a 2" lift as you only really lift it to fit much bigger tyre's 32/35" upwards. I think you would be better to save your money and buy a decent set of tyres rather than worry about lifting it or buy a set of standard height britpart etc springs as most disco's around £1500 will probably have sagging springs.

Just my 2 pence worth

i've got a modded 300tdi its lifted and running 33" mud tyres, its my only car and daily driver, fine on a and b roads, but on the motorway it doesn't really like going above 60mph. we put around £50 week in. Its fine for us. As said alot easier to work on, parts are cheaper than a td5, and you don't really need a code reader as much if at all on some models. Main problem with the d1 is rust pretty much everywhere. d2's(td5) it was mainly the rear half of the chassis that rots.
