Hi thebiglad I will be in Carrefore in Calais next month (a cheap day drip from P&O) I should have waited till then to get my oil at only £18 :( A few years ago in Carrefore i got some Mobile1 0w40 at half the price it was in the uk. I thought the oil prices in France matched ours now, wrong again then.

I won't go back to mineral now, so perhaps now I should extended the oil change intervals from 6k to 12k. as the syn oil is still a light brown after 6000 miles not like mineral, black after 1000.

Synthetic has a tendancy to leak out if it can, I had to nip the bolts on the rocker cover and sump to stop the drip otherwise ok.

Regards

Info taken from the can of Halfords oil:

5w40 Fully Syn. For max engine protection under extreme loading of enthusiastic driving. Also suitable for use in the latest turbo diesel engines.
5w30 Part Syn. Suitable for the latest efficience engines including all modern Fords from 1998 on.
10w40 Part Syn. Suitable for most modern multivalve, turbo or fuel injected engines where sinthetic protection is essential.
10w40 Enhanced Mineral. Suitable for most fuel injected engines.
15w40 Part Syn. Suitable for most non fuel injected engines since 1980 where synthetic protection is preferred.
15w40 Enhanced Mineral. Suitable for most non fuel injected engines since 1980.
15w50 Basic Mineral Sutable for most pre 1980 vehicles.

Note: "Lower numbers indicate greater fuel efficency for modern cars". it said on the can.

Hi Discool, thanks for that input.

Re servicing intervals, wih fully synth, you are supposed to be able to extend the time/mileage between changes, but for me because I have the time to do them and due to the relative low price of the oil, I would rather stick to more frequent changes. And having three cars and a bike I'm well tooled up to do them :D :D

When I do an oil change I allow it to drain for a long time, to ensure I get out as much as poss of the old oil, but after the new stuff has been in for only a short time it has gone black, which I understand doesn't mean it has lost it's protection value, it's just that I like things to be clean - yeah, sad I know, but hey, I get good mpg so I must be doing something right, eh??

Hiya Girve, how are you doing buddy?

I use 5w-40 in my '98Tdi300 auto. I find it helps a bit with starting and assuming you use a good quality oil with the correct rating ie API CE or higher (CF etc) you should be fine.

I use Carrefour 5w-40, it's a semi synth and I change it every 6000kms because I reckon it's cheap, the filters are cheap and enginers are not !! (the old oil is good for soaking fence posts in and starting bonfires - recycling you see !!)

If you used the same approach I can't see any reasons oil-wise why you would have any probs. LR say any oil with a viscocity between 5w-30 and 15w-40.

Keep it clean and you keep it mean !!

Hey Big im not too bad and you?

I'll leave it for another 3000 miles and change it again, she defo running nice n smooth again since I changed the oil on Saturday, but still feel she cud run a bit better.

I'll do the 5w 40 thing and stump up for some synth seems to be the way to go, by the time i finish with her she should be like brand new, seem to have a new job on it every weekend, all my neighbours ever see is me feet hanging out from underneath.

Wudn't have it any other way, at least doin yerself you know its getting done properly, thanks again big, much repsect :D

Thanks for that Girve, you're a good bloke.

If I remember right we've spoken about getting your Disco to deliver better mpg??

Well here's thought. Not long ago I did a full oil service on Wends Tdi200, inc gearboxes and axles. I used Difflocks synthetic oils EVO1 for the gearbox and EVO2 for the rest and I'm sure she is running, well sort of free-er, (I didn't know how to write that - you could tell couldn't you:eek: ) easier and quieter, if you know what I mean. She's up to 60 in the blink of an eye now.

It's expensive stuff I know, but how much is sanity/peace/not being driven crazy, worth??

I normally get oil from Costco cash and carry. Usually get a top brand (castrol or Chevron or Mobil) synth or semi-synth for around £10 for 4 litres (plus VAT).

Last fill was Castrol Magnatec, £20+vat for 8 litres.

I put Mobil 1 in my motorbike, 4 ltr for £17 + VAT

Halfords or Halfrauds you decide
