Does anyone know the exact date that free road tax started.

I know 1972 registered vehicals are tax exempt but I had heard that some 1973 vehicals were also.

Does anyone know?

Don't know about 1973 could be some are. As budget announcment was that all vehicles 25 years old were exempt from the date of the budget. That was i think April 1997, so it could be that 73 up to April are also exempt. DVLA will tell you.

It is based on the build date, so some cars registered in early '73, but built in '72, qualify

Vehicles manufactured prior to 1st January 1973.

Exactly what Davy says. That's why you'll see one or two rare cases of classic cars on "M" plates which still qualify for free tax.
