There should be a black plastic remover in tool kit. Get one off Ebay for a few quid. Item number: 400192733617. Or try a dealer. £4.74 plus post from Famous Four.

It should be with your jack and stuff under the boot floor in it's own little stowage bag. They are pretty easy to break so you may not have one.

The only caps I have to take off are on the lockers. The other caps on the nuts stay on (even though they feel loose)

I had this when I had to change a wheel on my parents' Disco. They're really weird, those nuts. I was confused as I thought they were all just covers as they all seemed loose but I couldn't get them off (except for the one on the locking wheel nut). They unscrewed ok though - I was expecting the covers to tear off.
It's a f*ck*ng useless design.
1: The tool for the locking nuts is too weak and breaks easily, leaving you on the shoulder with no way to get your wheel off the car.
2: The nuts are mild steel and the covers are stainless, causing a galavanic reaction that builds rust like crazy. The rust grows between the two, deforming the nut to the point where the socket doesn't fit and you have to go one size up.
I have no idea why they didn't just go with chromed nuts. Anyway, if you get the locking nuts off, replace them with regular ones so that you've eliminated at least one of the issues. For the other, I guess replacing all nuts every 5 years or so is the only way.
