arboorman, I like the design of that wheel arm. Is it still sturdy being only attached by one arm on right. Also, where did you buy it? can you link me if pos?

The one I saw had a single upright swivel post, bout 6" tall that bolted directly to rear at the bottom, it then had two tubular arms off it going diagonally across the door with the actual wheel mount on it. Something like this.... you'll have to excuse the pic, paint ain't the greatest.

RUDDdefender90/bevhelee - yup, its got two fixing's, one at the bottom attached to the rear tub chassis bolts (plus you can drill an additional two if required) and one at the top just under the body capping with a pretty soild plate bolted inside.

I got mine recently from ebay (£34) , think you can buy them new for about £150 from ebay or I think Mantec do them but not sure on price - look for wheel carriers for defender pick up.

This might work?!

nothing wrong with the drawing, reckon it would put a lot of strain on the fixings, suppose depends on the upper fixing point

My guess would be that it used something like a stub axel to provide the swivel, with the appropriate bearings in a sleave over the top and the arms then welded onto that. The upper fixing point would presumably be simply a locking point not a weight bearing one.

redhand you see your towbar rack thing on the more recent painted defender, I have the exact same. I was wondering can we use them to tow rope onto and get things moving, what about dead weights, such as landy in a ditch. I am sorting out my front recovery points with a winch bumper, but not yet got round to the rear

Im gona get myself one of them swing arms soon, but garage have my landy at moment and its getting rather pricey!

yes you can use a towbar for recovery.

yeah same, but so much smarter with the black look. Do you have to inform DVLA about colour change? inc insurance company? any cost incured?

redhand, would you get a shackle on it just below the tow ball, or would you shackle it up to the top rung of the rack, ie closest to the door. I only ask, because the tow ball part is only attached to the rack by a pin, right? and thought might not be strong enough.

well if you have truly made that from scratch i take my hat off to you,you obviously have access to some very fancy machinery to turn out a quality product like that ( compliment by the way ) and perhaps you could put it in to production and offer forum members a discount, its just from previous posts i thought youre a fireman not an engineer so i will appologise if i have offended you

I have heard of some people being good at one thing, and other trades at the same time? hehe. Either way looks tasty does that wheel carrier :). Went to salvage yard today, they had a spare wheel on a landy, but with a direct to rear door holder, said no to my friend, the forum says no to this! we need a swing arm!

it doesn't take an "engineer" to bend some tube and knock up a few brackets does it

and as said by Mr Rudd

I have heard of some people being good at one thing, and other trades at the same time?
