hello all! well finally got the disco back on the road after the clutch issue, now its thrown the next problem at me!

I gotta intermittent but quite often rubbing noise coming from the front drivers side wheel, so a few questions...

taken wheel off...
my brake pads do look a bit low so gonna change them...

next thing is wheel bearings... how do you test them? is it a case of holding the brake disc each side and giving it a wobble to see if theres any play?
if so ive done this and theres a little play..

next thing if it is the bearings, how easy would it be to change them?
looking at the 'here's how ah did it' thread it doesn't look all to bad..
also I assume you do both sides of the same axle at the same time?

sorry for the noob questions im still learning!

thanks everybody,

Nick :)

you can change wheel bearings in one hub at a time without doing other side ,unlike brake discs and pads were you change as axle set so as to keep braking square and even on both sides.setting is a matter of adjusting inner nut to just remove all free play from bearings then fitting lock washer and tightening outer nut tight

thanks james for your quick reply, right ive taken the wheel off the other side and theres a lot less play and the pads look like they got a few thousand miles left on them, so thinking it is the bearings gone!

what am I gonna need to replace them? any seals , special tools or stuff?, how long does it take to do them?

also any certain quality makes to look out for?

thanks! :)

try rtc3429g and ftc4785 and ftc3179 ,bearings will be timken if you go for g on end of number, you can drift old races out and cut a slot in one old race to allow you to use it to refit new races without damage ,1/2 bihex for caliper bolts helps as this can be most awkward part 1-2 hrs

as a quick fix as I need it for the weekend, I have a spare axle, is it much hassle to swap the hubs? I assume the bearings are in the hub? (sorry if that sounds noob!)

Easy to do mate and plenty of good tutorials around. Just make sure you torque the nut holding the bearing to the correct setting. If you have a haynes it tells you what it should be. You can buy bearing kits (Timken) for around £15 online and they include all the bits you need to change. If you have a punch you can knock the old races out with a hammer. I purchased a cheap set of drifts to do mine. I know they will come in handy again and it saves having to cut the old race to use as a drift. As JM said you can do just one wheel at a time.

As for the swap... I wouldn't bother personally, you don't know the condition of the bearings on the other axle. Replace for new and you know its safe and sound. Best of luck :tea:

Wouldn't bother swaping the hubs. You've still got to strip it down as far to swap them.
So for the time it takes to knock the old bearings and races out and put the new ones in you might as well change them.

Thanks guys great advice there, just took the clip off undone the bolts and pulled the part off the half shaft spline, A bit rusty inside! I changed those parts with the spares I had and greased it all up, tightened the adjusting nut and there's a lot less play,

Took for test drive and not a squeal, squeak or rubbing noise :) unlike this morning and last night!

Only a temp fix though, I think it best to replace all the bearings, gonna do brake discs and pads at the same time :)

Then on to the next problem, wonder what it will be?

Box spanner that's the one! Couldn't think of the name of it, that's great James thanks :) will help a lot!

Not the best of days......

Well I took out the play in the bearing last night by tightening the adjusting nut also checked the outer bearing and it looked fine, and greased it all up, took for a 20 mile drive with not a peep, filled up with diesel ready to go off roading today.

This morning.... 3 miles from home it gets noisy, pulls to the middle of the road so I stop in a near by layby, started stripping the bits off to get to the hub, and the hub would not pull off! had to use a bearing puller thing to pull the thing off.

when it came off out fell 10 or so bearings, they did not look good, were hot and the remainder of the bearing had disintegrated.

The AA man turns up and organises a flat bed to pick me up, and pointed out the stub axle had scored badly (I got a spare axle so stripped that and its all ready to fit :D just waiting for gasket :) ) he then watched me put it all back together only thing he did was take the brake pads out for me, well I guess that's my week planned out..

was really looking forward to today, ive had my disco 6 months now and only been able to green lane it twice with all the work ive had to do to it to get it ready.

all sounds pretty standard to me sorry to hear your woes mate but thats landies for ya

That's it discopol, I just wish it would give me a week off with no major problems, I ain't fussed about small problems like a window not working or so hint of that nature, just seems all the problems I get take it off the road.

However, I'm learning so much about how the landrover works and all the problems have been sorted by me and not a garage, I quite enjoy pulling it apart and fixing it.

Was really interested to see how all the shafts and bearings and splines ect work together in the axle when I took it apart today to get the stub axle sorted.

I've found that the first year with any new/used landy is always full of jobs as you put right the mistakes or neglect of the previous owner. It honestly gets better I promise you but it is like a rite of passage into landy ownership I'm afraid. Stick with it and one day it will run well and without issue for an extended time and that will make it all worth it. Keep the faith brother. ;)

Sounds pretty typical. I've recently done all 4 corners. The slowest parts were getting the bloody calipers off. Highly highly recommend Irwin bolt removers. You will need the extension set (13mm) if you need em. The second longest part is preloading. It's important to get the right amount of shims in place and make sure all bolts/nuts are tightened correctly, especially the hub nuts. Check the brass thrust washer too. If there has been play for a while, this could have worn. It's an easy job, but you have to be patient with the setup and get the shims right. Make sure you lift the cv housing when tightening the top pin or it won't sit properly.

Just to add, obviously you might not be going as deep as the cv area, but just incase :D Also, if as you say, bits are rusty, you might wanna find out where that water has been getting in. If you haveb't had it the landy too long, and you are getting bearing failure, for what it is worth, you may aswell take it right back to the axel and replace all seals and gaskets. As long as you dont have to replace any main parts, ie stubs, balls, etc, you're looking at ~ 25 quid a corner with some decent bearings. Bit more for the front.

As has been said, once you have gone through everything they can be pretty reliable.

My current one is a bit of a Frankenstein, officially I've only had it 6 months or so but the chassis and mechanicals are all from my last one because I had spent so much time changing everything and it was just the body was gone.

Since Christmas it's been used regularly with my missus even using it for a period for her 80 mile commute, and it's been totally reliable without a single problem.

Of course it has helped that I don't abuse it off road any more with its new body and interior. ;)

thanks for that guys :) I do hope it gets better!

next question, ive got my hubs ready for the new bearings, any tips for getting them in? should I grease first? I know about cutting a chunk out of the old race to drive in the new one.

just gotta put them in, change a stub axle as its scored badly, (waiting for new gasket) new brake discs and pads coming tomorrow and day off work on Thursday to sort it out :)

as for the water coming in, when I took it apart it wasn't greased all too good, a few months ago I went in some over the bonnet deep water so that's probably whats messed it all up!,

thanks again
