fitted new kp bearins and put it together no play and its free to move as it sould so wtf do i need shims for ?

have you no shims at all under top pin ,did you fit thrust washer in bottom of bush

there was no thrust washer in the kit? all that was in the old one was 2 x 2p pieces which i presume was to take up wear and no there isnt any shims on the top

you need rialko thrust washer in bottom of bush then you will need shims,it swivels on this washer

bugger, the bottom mushroom bit you mean? it had like a built in sleeve which looked non metal, looks like i will be taking the auld girl tae bits again

if you look in bottom of bush sides have rialko and bottom just steel with oil hole ,washer is rialko with hole in center

it is a fibre a resin bonded material , used for bushings ,never seen one fasten up properly with no shims ,old ones still there
as an aside....
had to remove top plate with stub from top of king pin on a Disco axle (brake bracket attached) and the bugger wont go back in - any tips?

nope none on it when i took it to bits other than the 2 x 2p on the bottom mushroom, what i couldnt understand is what they actually did, what benefit does lifting the top bushing up by shimming it?

how do you mean ,brake pipe bracket wont go back or pin bracket is seperate from pin and needs to go back that way as bracket slides into back plate notch,back plates are allways worth discarding

the bearing inside must be misaligned or shaggit have you tried to stick it in and wiggling it
the hub i mean
i removed brake pipe bracket, but the two bolts that attach it, also hold the top (king pin) plate in position. Unfortunately I pulled the (king pin) plate out and now it wont go back in
.

as said bearing may move swivel housing will defineatly and will need lining up before fitting pin hold shims on pin while fitting,bearing will need to be square to pin before fitting

it will be a case of looking in the top and seeing whats gan on, probably fiddly and its not the kind of thing you can give a battering or you will ruin the race gently gently catchy monkey lol

I think the idea of the thrust washer and shims is that the swivel shouldn't move freely - there should be some degree of stiffness. I assume this contributes to a degree of friction damping to the steering.
