Can anyone help.....With a budget of around £400 what would be the best winch i could buy?

In those circumstances I've always wondered why people put them on the front, and pull them selves further into the unknown. It always seems more sensible to put it on the back, and pull yourself back onto save ground, then plan a better route.

or they put a cheap underpowered one on....carry it around for a year or few without ever actually needing/using it.....then snap cable or simply run out of grunt the first time they use it lol

Never stop exploring Davec ;) why pussy out and go home? when you could get stuck upto your waist and spend all night winching your way through. People buy all this gear and never use it. winches/spots/split-charge systems. Nothing more challenging than getting royally stuck and winching through the night with your buddies :D

No i have not had to do it! but i have used my winch on a few occassions. once when we on our own (winch + waffles) and another to pull my self off a large icesheet on strata florida (NY day) we camped overnight (-9 :)). front end got bogged and the rears were spinning. quick tug and we were off again.

depends how often you go with other people. We mostly travel solo so a winch is almost a life saver.

£400 will buy you a nice 2nd hand warn on ebay. keep your eyes peeled for a bargain. got my M8000 for £150

Last time I got properly stuck a front mounted winch would have been no use whatsoever. Tirfor is indeed the answer.
