Hi all,

so, the Disco 2 which I have sunk about £20k into is about to fail its MOT, on, you guessed it terminal chassis rot. Mainly at the front unusually but also at the back in the usual spot.

3 options:

1) patch it for about 400 notes to get another year out of it
2) a more substantial repair for about £2k - but the inevitable will happen sooner or late so feels like wasted money
3) go nuclear with a new chassis for circa £7-8k (Maer)

I am going to go with option 3 as this makes the most sense to me given I plan to keep it and given what I have already spent.

I have zero intention of selling it so am just curious as to what a very sorted D2 would go for to the right buyer with a galv chassis and all the invoices you could want. This thing has had pretty much everything done. So everything you would look for when inspecting pre purchase is done. New gearbox, transfer box, air suspension renewed, no welding required, sun roofs and all the niggles in between all ok, sills solid, diff lock added, the list goes on. 125k miles.

Interested in the debate on what you would get for it with that peace of mind. I note they are creeping up in value but I would say this one is in the minority of being able to prove the works been done through receipts to a high standard at a well know independent specialist.

Appreciate your thoughts and insights. And anyone who has also gone the whole hog and put it on a new frame, curious to know your experiences and how well made the Maer products are.

That chassis sounds very much on the expensive side, but what is the point of this thread if you have no intention of selling it?
Apart from wanting to know what Maer products are like.

I'm afraid it doesn't matter what you have had to spend on maintenance it doesn't make it worth anymore than the market value of a 125,000 mile D2 with galvanised chassis which may make it more desirable and add 2k to the value.

perhaps I have misunderstood the essence of the forum. I thought that people with limited knowledge (me) could reach out to people with more knowledge (you), to spark a conversation and ask questions to get insight. Sorry you find this pointless but I thought sharing my thoughts and getting peoples views was what it was all about.

If my salient question of how much are rare D2's worth in good condition, with all major works done is a waste of time then obviously I have missed the numerous adverts across the web which feature such vehicles.

I also thought me highlighting how much i am faced with spending on the 3 options could help someone else in a similar scenario.

Without pictures it is impossible for someone to pass any sensible judgement.
Is it stock or a jacked up monstrosity?
What year is it?
Manual or auto?
You would never get your money back regardless .
2" terrafirma lift, 51 plate (2001), auto (new box from Bristol Transmissions). Not looking to get my money back. Just interested what they are worth as there are so few that I see around in this condition with all the gotchas sorted. They say D2's are rising so was just hoping to ignite a debate on what I thought was a rare topic. Thanks for your reply though

perfect - thanks for your reply. I had no idea if it made it more desirable. It has practically been rebuilt and the new galv chassis is pretty much the final piece of the puzzle. I have seen some crazy numbers associated to pristine examples (which could easily suffer from faults I have had to rectify at any point). So my point is being able to evidence the 'rebuild' of this vehicle, what people thought of it now or in the future. When I am dead, I plan to hand it down to the boy

With limited info I'm going for a ball park figure of £5k.
My son has a tidy stock 2004 but the way I see it is regardless what you spend on its always brewing up another problem.
In general are they really desirable vehicles, not to most people, except cheap ones for the jacked up monstrosities owned by people who don't know the difference between a greenlane and a off road site.
In my mind they are also quite expensive to own and run.

haha I can't disagree. It is only a matter of time before the next problem surfaces. However I have a rather misguided loyalty to it and keep spending to keep it going. Mine gets used off road but absolutely not abused. Thanks for your message

landy peeps ive know over the years used Richards galv chassis they are 3k for the D2, I dont see anyone paying near 10k for
an old disco even with a new galv chassis, if thats what your asking. If your considering doing it then sell in on then nope!!!!
Sack it lol
If its for a labour of love then why not you've spunked 20k so whats another 7/8k you might as well go all out.
Either that or sell it to me cheap & I'll weld it an use it I could be doing with D2.

Anyhow where's the pics. ;)

Having read your post!

£7-8k for chassis?? Gold plated??🤔

Bite the bullet and see if you can get the price down on the welding! Get it through its yearly appointment!

Then invest in a small welder yourself! Then you have the whole year to learn! then sort any problems that it throws up?
And save some pennies for your upgrade later??

As for your gold plated chassis? There is a polish (I think it may be Maer?) company selling chassis for 2.5k!!!(don't know the postage/shipping price??)

Kev

no idea what you mean or if this is a joke
It's worth whatever someone will pay for it.

If you're never going to sell it, then what it might be worth is immaterial.

Only another 16 posts to go.

P.S. the half eaten Mars bar offer still stands..........but only for the next hour.

Assuming the 3/4k is garage labour costs to fit the chassis. The Maer company do 2 galvi choices ???
One is basic the other is premium ?? How do you tell the difference..

I managed to follow the Mars comment but had no idea about the number of posts before you can sell. Not that I will be doing that anyway

the 7-8k is labour and the chassis. I am going for the 'Premium' chassis which includes bolt kit etc

Hi Kev, I should have said the 7-8k is the premium Maer chassis + fitting. So thats all in subject to anything else needing doing on top.

And I wont be getting a welder based on my soldering skills at school :) which is why everything on my D2 is so expensive as I have to pay to have it done properly
