Hi I've got a range rover with 16" alloys with 235/70/16 tyres what would be the biggest tyres that would fit my alloys? I'm not really worried about rubbing the arches etc as I plan to fit springs with a 2" lift and a 2" or 3" body lift

I suppose you have the 7.5 x 16 rims, then the 235/70x16 are the correct tyre.
I strongly advise to keep them as they are rare to find second hand.
I drive the 255/65x16 with winter tyres on 8x16 rims and 245/70x16 AT's in summer. 245/75x16 will fit, but you might have to remove the front mud flaps but they are only specified for the 7.5x16 rim.
Your speedo will be incorrect, so do some calculations oder check out with your gps based navi.
Anything bigger will ask for reinforced drivetrain or you will soon be very experienced in changing diffs and/or driveshafts.:D
If you want to go bigger, rangerovers.net is a good source of information.

7.5 rims are not fitted to the P38 they are fitted to classics, that is why i asked what car he had. 255/65/16 are the correct tyres with standard 8Jx16 rims. Both 245/70/16 and 245/75/16 would be illegal to use on the road in this country on either rim as the speedo would read incorrectly.

Ohh it's defiantly got them tyres on at the moment I was looking at some 265/75/16's insa turbos but wasn't sure if they would go on my alloys ?

They would go on but look like balloons on 7.5J rims. You would be doing 65.1 MPH at an indicated 60 MPH so illegal. Fitting coils with a 2"/3" lift is not the best idea you have ever had, fitting those tyres for road use would be a step beyond reasonable. Hope you have good insurance.

I don't no if my rims are 7.5 or 8j and I'm not really sure what size tyres to get. I understand that it would be illegal as the speed would be different but that wouldn't really bother me as the car is only really used for off-roading/green laning. But regarding the coils with a 2" lift is there something I should know?

Sorry yes, 7.5J was not mentioned by you. The 235 tyre size is more commonly fitted to Classics i think rather than the P38. Rim size should be on them somewhere. With a suspension lift high speed road use maybe a little dodgy with the high centre of gravity. Will roll a lot easier. But if you are using it for what you say and take care it should be ok. Think the tyres you propose are a little too large to be honest but it's your car.

Ok cheers for that I appreciate your opinion and advise
So if my wheels are 8j the standard tyre size should be 255/65/16

You can stick 235s on but the profile is different. Cannot remember now what mine are but I prefer them to the 255 on the 16" rims. It is in the Handbook!

Handbook in RAVE says:

Wheel sizes:

8J x 16 (use with 255/65 tyres) .........................................................
8J x 18 (use with 255/55 tyres)

Sure I saw a 235 one somewhere. It'll come back to me.

Classics have 235 tyres P38 never has.

Found my handbook (1995 DT)

8J as above but also 7J x 16 (use with 235/70 tyres).

I've got sets of both: 18" 255s and 16" 235s. I prefer the latter for anything other than motorway driving. Actually, I've a further set of 18" 255s on winter tyres ... and very little space in the garage!
