Took the rear wheel arch and rear quarter panel off my 110 yesterday to inspect a rust patch. So how should I deal with this rust? The replacement part is too expensive to buy at £500:eek:

And the replacement part needed....But at about £500 per side its a bit expensive

From what i can see it doesnt look that bad, a decent body shop should be able to sort that out at not much cost....

Certainly be a lot cheaper than £500 per side...

Or have ago yourself grind the rust off and treat....

That's not that bad mate. Cut all the crud out and plate it up.

Remember it well. I had a welder on the wagon for a day and he charged me £100 - well worth it.

To prevent it getting any worse you could slap some Hammerite Kurust, Loctite rust treatment or Jenolite it. It should help stop the rust getting any worse.

ratty is spot on with that advice - I use either hammerite (bought a 10L tub of hammered red - looks horrid but does the job and was very cheep) or waxoyl cut with old engine oil.

I used 5 gallons during the last rebuild.

Thanks guys. Is going in for a respray on Monday and the spray shop used to employ a welder for such things. Unfortunately he doesn't work for them anymore so I've got till Monday to sort it out, would be nice to get it done prior to respray but might have to sort it after.

The replacement part is excessively overpriced don't you think? Would be cheaper to buy an old defender as a doner!

Best to cut the rot out YRM metal solutions do repair pieces.
I haven't used them i have fabricated the bits myself before not to bad a job. I was only about £15 to do both side's when i bought the plate cut to size from the metal supermarket and just cut the old crap out and welded the new pieces in. Expect to pay £30 -£35 an hour for a mobile welder or sweet talk someone on here I'm in Glasgow so prob to far away but i am sure someone will be closer

If your deadline wasn't so tight I could have asked my mate to have a look. Looks easy enough to sort tho, we have sorted MUCH worse! Definately ask about to get it welded before the respray, you don't wana be messin about with it after.

It's only being resprayed on the outside for now, so perhaps I can get it sorted after? If your mates interested then that could be useful. I'd rather pay someone through LZ than a complete stranger.

From what I can see that rust is cosmetic? It looks solid enough to me.... give it a good wire brushing and behind/inside if you can. Then as mentioned use the rust killer, do the other side while you have the rivet gun out. If you have waxoyle then give a daubing before rivetting up.
I use this stuff rather than Hamerite black.... it really is nice stuff to work with and gives a really nice gloss finish..... save yourself a few bob as from your pics it just looks a bit tired. Check it again in 2 years :)

I have to agree with mrjc. I'd just be getting my drill/grinder wire/cup brushes on it and painting it. If my eyes don't deceive me, It doesn't look bad at all. You've definitely caught it well before the point that you should be thinking about replacing it for £500 ;)
