works for me, aftermarket boss tends to make it quite a bit closer to you but then thats the same with any wheel i guess

Does anyone know of a decent way to refurb an old series steering wheel.....now my old gurl is looking quite together the wheel really lets her down and fed up with manky black hands on damp mornings. Got a leather cover on the way but any ideas/****-taking/abuse for the spokes?
Quite fancy one of those shiney metal spoke jobbies but they are selling for silly money

No problems at all, I don't even give it a thought as they are perfectly visible.
The old 4-spoke is 16.5 inches diameter.

Ahh do you look over the top of it? I'd like to be able to try a few different sizes! They arnt cheap are they!? I was thinking of one of those 'mountney' copies on eBay. About 40 quid and a boss for about 20..
No, I look through it as normal and can see all four gauges perfectly.
What is a "Mountney copy" (your link just takes me to E bay and not a specific item)? Mountney have been making steering wheels for over 30-years and I have used several of them in that time.
You have to be a bit careful as their 'classic' range will not fit an industry standard '6-hole pattern' boss but they also make '6-hole pattern' wheels so you can interchange at will. On my current LR I used to use a Mountney 14-inch leather & alloy 'classic' wheel but now I use a 12-inch leather & alloy 'Raid' wheel on a Mountney '6-hole pattern' boss C/W Snap-Off adapter which I find an excellent set-up.
If thinking of getting an aftermarket wheel first remove your existing one to check how many splines you have on the column (36 or 48), don't try to work out how many a vehicle of your age SHOULD have but just remove the wheel and count them to see how many you HAVE got. It takes only minutes and removes the possibility of ordering the incorrect part.

That will do the job ok.
That is about the cheapest one Mountney sell. The vinyl isn't as thick as leather and you haven't got the bling of the polished alloy spokes but it is a perfectly functionable wheel which should be quite pleasant to drive behind if you are still using the original 4-spoke one.
A puller is almost always required but is really simple to make. I made mine using a short piece of flat bar with a couple of holes drilled in it and makes removing the wheel a quick & simple operation.
