Hi one and all

I am going to fit a electrial fan to my 200 tdi defender and was wondering what would be the best size and make i can get?

you don't need one.

unless you live in a very hot country and do a lot of heavy towing.

I assume you are going to take off the standard fan? Personally, I have always ventured to the scrapyard and found ones which push a lot of air. a single 12/13" should be more than adequate if it is decent.

Are you using that setup for your Africa trip then? I'd take the mechanical fan as backup incase you need it.

I fitted a 15" Kenlowe fan to my SIII with a non turbo 2.5 diesel Tranny engine. It only needs the fan on for uphill greenlaning or towing up long steep hills.

Yup, not sure of the exact size, but its just about small enough to fit infront of the rad. And shifts a heck of a lot of air. You just have to be casreful when do the bonnet catch if the fan is on. Got a manual cut off though so not really an issue.

And yup, deffo taking the standard fan just incase - thats already in the box of spares :)

That's great that you're using an old series Land-Rover for that trip. I'm so feckin jealous - wish I was going. One day I'd like to take my SIII military ambulance down to Cape Town. What spares are you taking then? You may have already done this, but pulling out the rear halshafts to check that the splines are not twisted up (indicating they are about to snap) might be a good idea. I'd take a couple of spares personally.

ive just got a 306 fan unit, the twin fan whatsit. Im gonna fit it to the 300TDi, havn't checked the size properly but it looks about the same.

And i strongly recommend a fan if you use your LR. I almost boiled my 300, was tow starting my mates van. 2nd gear, full throttle, turbo working flat out, barely doing 25 MPH, gauge began to go up.

Admittedly it is rare, but i paid £15 for the fans, and they come with relays attached. Pics to follow :)
