Evening all.

I'm after getting a range or a disco as a family car need something big to chuck the dog in the back. My question is I'm torn what to get I know I'm going the land rover way but what I don't know. I only do probably 250 miles max a month so not too fussed about mpg. I was looking at p38's as they have the room and luxury and my budget is only £2500ish once I sell my current car. So need help to decide.

I also work a little on defenders so the disco shares the same chassis so that's a help when it will inevitably break 8).

So any input appreciated.
 
i hope you are handy with some spanners, as if you by a landy, you will need them, unless you have very deep pockets... stay clear of a p38 so many things to pack up on electrics side of things. get yourself a tidy 300 tdi disco..
 
So p38s that bad then but surely they all can't be that bad I've looked at a few threads on them and they must have soon good ones. I was looking at the disco 300 my brother has one cost him a £1000 a few year ago and done 30000 in it no probs. what about the newer t5's how are they. Do I go v8 as well or stick with 2.5?
 
There are some good p38 out there , but for £2500 you will get a piece of crap , spend £4000 then you will get one thats had some cash spent on it. like any car , you could get one and never have a problem . at the end of the day you come on a forum , and find every problem going , its not always a good thing , but p38 its a known fact they are a money pit.... td5 then again , can be a money pit , and for £2500 you will get a shed ... 300 tdi for your budget.
 
Ok so no p38 then I take it. Are the disco 300s any good then I know there are good and but I'm just speaking in general. What are the v8s like are they reliable or just stuck with tdi.

Sorry for all he questions I'm just trying to find out all I can. It's working this thread though I've been put off a p38 (for now).
 
had a rangie the old two door classic.crap on fuel and always needed bushes of some sorts for every mot. however had 2 disco`s the 300tdi and current 200tdi.must say the 300 were nicer to drive.but if you not planning any serious offroad why dont you go td5?
 
I'm not planning on going off roading in it just I live in north Yorkshire and go over to the north west so a 4x4 would be better for the snow. Looking for one now as the prices are dropping now.
 
i wouldn't bother with a td5 disco, from my experience with them they're not worth it.

300tdi is a good beast though, but check the boot floor, sills, etc. v. well
 
For your budget get a really good 300tdi. I've had both, my old tdi which was fab, cannot fault bar the rust, abs light and teabag sunroofs :p, and a td5, silverlandy. I Love my TD5, she's a beast and immaculate inside and out and under the hood but I paid a LOT for the privilege and as I can only do very basic maintenance myself she is not cheap to keep!

you can get good early td5 for that as long as you check chassis rear especial,body wont be rotten like tdi ,
 
So we are looking a 300tdi then. The question is then v8 or 2.5? How are they in reliability I have more experience on diesels so that tips the scales more to them.

Errm 300Tdi is the engine and it's a 2.5ltr straight 4 turbo diesel :doh:
 
Yes, for your budget, a 300tdi discovery series 1 looks to be the best bet. Although the TD5 is a great engine, despite what anyone says, you will not get a good one around £2500. The v8 is bad on fuel and wanders in its reliability, if you know what I mean. diesels tend to be more reliable. It would be better to get a late discovery 300tdi (late 90's but pre 98 when the TD5 came out. For your budget, you can probably get a fairly low mileage for teh age Disco one. As James said ^ - make sure you check those rust areas. Just because the underneath looks tidy, new lick of black paint, doesent mean it is! Poke round underneath with something (haha - :-| ). If it doesent feel right, it probably isnt. There are plenty out there, don't be rushed into the first one you see!
