Get as alate model P38 as you can for your 4k budget....
Diesels are reliable in the engine sense aslong as they are maintained and have a strong battery...
V8's are thirsty and prone to slipped liners and overheating...
L322 for 4k would not be possible....budget around 7-8K for a very erly one with a few niggles...
The L322 eats gearboxes for fun, and at 2-3k a pop can get expensive....
For your 4k I would go for a post '99 DSE or even a dHSE P38 Auto....
But any Range Rover should not be bought on a budget....they will empty a healthy bank balance rapidly if you can't DIY and Electrically diagnose yourself....
And the golden rule - Never Ever buy a Range Rover with a fault unless you either a) know how much it will cost to repair or b) can put up with/justify the expensive repair bills.

Don't worry too much about the letters on the tailgate, check the details in the advert. Mine was built with walnut trim and Oxford leather seats as extras in a DSE and many will have had bits upgraded over the years.

If it's diesel the top spec was the HSE. If's it's petrol then Vogue, Vogue SE, etc etc.
You'd struggle to find a Holland & Holland for £4k though!
I had a 97 2.5 DSE and I loved it. That will be a decent spec too.

The letters on the tailgate mean nothing, they are typical BMW kit cars. Mines a late 2000 DHSE, no electric seats, no sunroof I'm pleased to say.
The only way to tell is to look.
You should be able to get a good diesel 2000 model for £4K once the winter premium disappears.
The diesel engine is a much better bet than the V8 from a fuel economy and reliability point of view.
For 4k, I'd spend about 3 on a vehicle then save the last grand plus an additional grand for your first year of ownership. This is where all of the little problems the owner didn't want to fix hence selling it will crop up.
There are no good Range Rovers, only less bad ones. So look for the least bad RR you can find and avoid coils like the plague. They are usually carried out by people who like to cheap out on preventative maintained so if they've cheaped out on suspension chances are they've skipped a service or two. This is bad news for a RR as they are very sensitive vehicles.
Also avoid any where the adds says "loss of job forces sale", although cheap, chances are they haven't been looked after. If it has any form of drug dealer wheels, walk away.
If you can find out when the airbags were last replaced, they have a shelf life of 7 to 8 years. If they are getting close to that age, budget for £250 for a new set of GenIIs.
Shed is 1k price band. That is the law of The Shed.

I would suggest a Diesel p38.
But try and get something with lots of history and air-suspension fully working. Learn how to use it and try it extensively when you are looking at one.
Check what works. Check all electrics twice and ensure the car drives well upto 70mpg.
Select LR and know how to do it.
