I thought it was time to drain and refill both axels. The rear was fine the front however was a different story. What came out was the colour of porrage with the consistancy of paint. The drain plug had plenty of muck stuck to it which I assume is minute bits of the diff. Am i looking at a new diff in the near future or have i caught it in time.

put fresh oil in and try ,its had water in it

Any idea how water could get into it?

wading, condensation,how long before previous oil change i would do it once a year at least ,i often find one axle on vehicle with water contamination even on ones that look like they dont offroad

Not sure of the history of the vehicle. I only got it a couple of months ago and am still in the process of going through all the servicing items. Good tip about changing it every year, I thought it was everytime you change the gearbox oil.

when you recondition enough axles gearboxes,engines etc you can tell ones with regular oil changes ,car companies dont make service schedules for the good long term protection of vehicle but as little as can be got away with,hence use of synthetic oils that retain lubrication properties,but doesnt take into account contamination from inside and out,gearboxes are actually made now with seals on internal bearings that filter **** out so bearing hopefully runs in clean oil even if rest of box isnt,this dosent help gears ,synchros etc,just to save a few oil changes

Might be worth checking your axle breather pipe is actually connected...

Just a thought.

the oil looks really thin for ep90.
