These rockers and valve stem caps have about 30,000 miles wear at the most, surely they should last longer? If it's not normal wear and tear what could have caused this?

Poor lubrication, blocked oil feed.

You could be right, they were probably a certain well known brand. Once the caps went I assume the top of the valve stem was hard enough to cause the wear on the rocker pads, which were the same brand.

the caps stop the valve stem from mushrooming which takes alot of miles not normally necessary either poor lubrication or poorly hardened parts
