I need to get some mild steel formed up to patch me S111 chassis. What guage was the original chassis metal? Also as I am going to be using an old stick welder what setting would people recommend?[/quote]

yeah , 2-3mm , am in the process of repairing a ser2a chassis in me workshop, been welding between 35 and 55 amp with 2 -2.5 rods, no probs, if yer welders older yer might wanna purra few more amps on to compensate fer a drop in power over the years.
do a test piece, over lap and weld bout 6" of steel scrap of the same as the chassis, if the penetration can be seen from the back yer on the right lines, if not - more amps, if yer burning holes - less amps. easy as that.

i gather welding underneath with a MIG is even more of a bugger than arc welding

only cause of the splatter and sparkes droppin down yer neck
