Correct, should be done using pressure only on the fork for the ball joint that is being removed or replaced. You tube is full of this stuff and people follow and cock things up. Put in interference fit. Max three changes according to Land rover.
It's actually cast steel i would think. But spreading the forks is not a good idea for lots of reasons. You can mostly get away without having to centralise the drive shaft to the oil seal if you are careful. This needs a very expensive special tool. Complete cock up and not the way to do it.
That is horrible.
I got the swivels out using the correct tool with no problem. I put the new ones in the freezer for 24 hours before fitting them and they slid in nicely.
