C reg is 85 so originally it could have been a 12J or a 19J (2.5 n/a or 2.5 turbo introduced that year)..........but it was a while ago so without looking under the bonnet who knows.....could be anything in there

200 TDi was introduced in 89

Its either a (donkey) 2.5 N/A or a (catastrophe) 19J.

or you could ask if its had a conversion to a 200/300 tdi.

So its more than likely a 19j as its got the air vents ontop of the wings, they're only there for turbos right?

could do a conversion i suppose.

My 1985 90 originally had a 2.25 petrol and it has the vents on the topside so that is not an indication of it having a diesel.

It looks like, as said, a N/A or TD, unless it has had a transplant, the Defender 200tdi's have an intake vent on the back of the front wing, which this hasn't, but the reg plate usually tells all, my dads is a B reg 84 and that started out life as a N/A, so that's my guess if it's standard :D

The vent on the wing top is for the heater. The one on the drivers side is there for no reason that I can fathom. heater is on that side for lhd vehicles I would say. 19j has no intercooler, but the later tdis do, and they're by the radiator so there is never going to be a scoop for that like some vehicles have when the intercooler is sat on top of the engine for instance.

I know, how much do you think its worth with the 19j?

thanks

With a decent chassis and bulkhead, I wouldn't pay more than £2500 tbh but everyone's different, If I bought it I'd ditch the engine for a 200tdi unless it's already been done

It sold for 1800 quid which isnt bad but i couldnt buy it anyway, insurance companys have some strange rule on under 25's driving vans, insurance for a van 8200!!! insurance for country of same spec, 768!! So im on the look out for a country now

I would think Iceland would be a good buy

Italy could be going for less and Spain could be very cheap soon ;) :D :D

Given what I've read in this thread, philsefo I would definitely recommend that you ask advice on here before buying any Land Rover that you see advertised. There are a lot of people with a lot of knowledge who can help you make a good choice. You obviously still have a few things to learn about Defenders and Nineties (I know I do) and it would be a shame if you ended up buying a piece of junk.

Thanks for the advice, im a complete novice with defenders and 90's, ive just finished a rebuild on a series 3 and that made me abit of money so im deffinitly wanting to do a 90 next, would prefer a defender though, i dont like modifying land rovers but would really want a 200tdi.
