Hi All,

Put in orders yesterday for:
Camshaft kit (Piper cams, chain, lifters etc)
Pushrods
Rocker shafts
Water pump

UJs
Ball joints (front hubs)

Plus service stuff for engine and gearbox.

This is all so I can get shot of the constant ticking noise from the engine, figured while I had it all apart to investigate, I might as well replace. (plus general maintenance for UJ & ball joints!)

So, is there anything else I should do at the same time?

Might get a set of big end bearings (as they're only 30odd quid)

Not sure about oil pump. Can't justify a full new one, but island do repair kits. Not sure if I should just leave well alone, I don't ever get the oil warning light on, and I don't have the kit to test oil pressure.

Any thoughts / suggestions?

If its All coming apart including the crank piston rings is the tapping that bad

no, gonna leave the crank, pistons and heads in place and do everything else around it.

Yep. the heads on the engine are fine, but the tapping is doing my head in!!!

A mechanics stethoscope is a good investment, you would in most cases be able to locate the area of the tapping reasonably easily. Basically the louder it gets the closer you are to it.

I've tried the DIY method - i.e long screwdriver. The best I can get it to is somewhere under the intake manifold, so i reckon something in the valve train is the culprit, and assuming false economy changing bits without all on that area.

She's due a coolant change anyway (and its my turn to have fun with o-rings too) so all in all, although expensive, worth doing (I hope).

Would like to have found the reason too, but I think I'll have to put it down to just wear and tear (hence the oil pump musings)

Sounds like you have a pretty knackered tappet then. Have you tried turning engine over to compression on each cylinder and checking for play push rod to rocker. That would tell you which one it is.

I've not, but I will when I get the intake manifold off, although I have a suspicion its gonna be pretty obvious when I can see them!

Its the LPG I'm a bit nervous of removing, but only coz I haven't done it before. Sure it will be fine when I do it. Labels, photos, and putting the smoke out!!!

Will take photos and do write up of the overall cam change - can't seem to find one on LZ

I know you said you were not doing it, but a new oil pump would make a lot of sense if you are doing the rest.

I know, I'm struggling with that tbh. I know it makes sense to do it as I've got it that far apart, but its another £195+vat (which after I've just spent £900 on parts isn't going to go down too well with swmbo!!!).

Do you think its worth, as at least an overhaul rather than replacement, trying the repair that island have:

which I could get away with as its only £30+vat.

I have to confess, I'm not sure how the oil pump works (other than it pumps oil round the engine!!), so not sure if that repair kit will solve any potential issues with a car with 110k on the clock (she had a new short engine a few years back, but before I owned her so don't know if the oil pump would've been changed then (nothing on the receipt). I'm hoping that was a top hat engine!!).
