You can get a lot more disco for your money and they're choice to drive on the road and great for towing.
 
Sounds like your gonna be towing a couple of big horses and if you are going to take passengers with you too I suggest you go for a 110. It will be more roomy and better on long journeys for towing. It has proper forward facing 2nd row of seats and plenty of room for your tack in the back.

Honestly if you’re worried about cost of fuel than a Landy isn't for you. However the overall cost of ownership is lower than a car if you factor in servicing, insurance depreciation etc. especially of you service it yourself.

I've looked at the links you posted and the first Landy on the first link is near me, I even considered it myself for me "Morris" he wants one now too.

Be patient, look at loads as it can take a time to find the right one, steer clear of eblag. I would never buy a vehicle unseen off there.

As a part time tree surgeon, or wood butcher as my mates call it, I often tow a braked twin axle trailer with upwards of three tons of logs no problem. Sometimes it may have been more than four tons but dont go there.
My wife also has a twin horse box which our Volvo estate ****s itself unless it dont have any horses in it.
There are more reliable 4x4s such as Landcruisers but I'd not be without my Defender.
Not the most comfortable of cars but who cares? Had a grin the size of Cheshire in the recent snow and earned a fair few bob towing people off their drives or out of ditches.
Buy the best you can and look after it and it will serve you well. Not to mention they are just fun to drive.

Spot on! I had to get insured on my Dads little Citroen for a week a month or so ago and although it was quicker setting off, it wasn't a patch on the whole driving experience that you get from a 90. The seats are also surprisingly comfy, I don't know why people consider them so uncomfy. I drove from Leeds to Weymouth (8 hours straight) last Summer on a trip to Guernsey and I didn't have any aches or pains as such!
 
Not much during the week as i've got a company van, so only weekends, camping, off-roading and travelling. 80% of last years' mileage was abroad.
 
Use mine every day for the 30 mile round trip school run and more if I'm working away from home. To increase the economy you can get an overdrive and fit it yourself in an afternoon, mine makes a big reduction in the fuel consumption and engine noise level. Another advantage is you can split the gears between 3-4-5th which could help while towing. Talk to Devon4x4 when you need one.

All the family love our Defender, as said elsewhere in this thread they're just not like cars, it's more than that. The rear door makes more noise than anything else in the car and I'm working on that challenge. Comfort wise, well it's not as Mercedes but it's good enough for me.
 
its your ££££ your spending.....and at risk of upsetting the TD5 owners,and speaking as someone whos bought and sold a fair few.........if it hasnt got TDi written on it then walk away as it isnt suitable for what you want.......there now watch the TDF5 comments fly!!!!!!!!!

do about 53k a year with mine.reliability not a problem.90s great of road but just not enough roomin them.also 110 not as choppy on road as 90
 
Bloody good time to buy a disco mind! Cheap as chips! And will do all you want it to.

Depends whether you want a car or another member of your family which a defender feels like and could well cost like!

Seems like you got enough going on in your house!!!:D
 
My house is a bloomin hectic place!

We have a great dane, golden retriever, papillon pup and 4 kittens to contend with too so I think a 110 is in order...:cool:

I very much like the idea of making the car my own. So many bolt on and off options as well as the space to do whaveter you want which isnt sold by Land Rover! A few scatter cushions teehee! :rolleyes:
 
I do about 15k miles a year and most of the time I'm paying for my own fuel but I love it and I don't care..

if you want a bit more comfort go for the discovery.. they are cheaper to buy and just as good at the sort of work you are going to ask yours to do.. plus the right one has heated leather and a cd player etc making the long motorway slogs more endurable..

I'm not overly bothered about the comfort of it as I can always fettle it a little (no comments please :rolleyes:) or change the seats. I'm not after a plush car as otherwise I would be going for like you say a Disco or something. We had a Merc convertable but ended up resorting back to a 4 x 4 as it wasnt practical for what we do....

Hopefully we are off to the auction mentioned previously as soon as the redundancy thing has passed but I know there is a car auction at York - do they have them? I've only ever been to the horse auctions there...
 
brightwells is the largest 4x4 auction in the uk,and if you look at thew website anytime from the thursday to the tuesay(auction day)then you can actually see the vehicles that are for sale.......so you neednt go if nothing takes your fancy.....

Ahhh so it is actually the largest? Thats it, i'm sold!!

Only thing is I havent got a clue what I am looking for but the ones I have looked at that have gone for what I can afford have had about 70k on the clock, 1 owner and have been 98 plates so I may just have to take pot luck!! :doh:


I have just looked at yesterdays sales and some beauties went! There aint any reason not to attempt driving home if I won if it has an MOT is there? Or is that a no no?
 
ive driven them back with no tax before now(have trade insurance)....but in the end i gave in and bought a large trailer....but its up to you lol,most have an mot anyway,its be a nasty cop that did you for no tax under those circumstances etc......but for choice then you cant beat the place
