Just had some serious welding done to add box section, rock sliders and tree sliders in place of rotten sills. Cost a small fortune and got me thinking about learning to weld myself so that I can do simple patching etc on the Disco.

Just after a bit of advice as wouldn't know where to start, what welder - Tig, Mig, Arc etc. How to practice and what to practice on for instance. Any help appreciated.

Hi Cirrus, bought myself a Mig welder from Machine Mart a few years ago, saved myself a fortune doing repairs etc to my old classic rangie. Practice makes perfect.

Good shout - that's what I'm hoping to do!

That's pretty helpful!

So it's mig I am likely to do

yep tis what they usually teach. Personally I wouldn't mind getting hold of some oxy/acet gear. But it's either too pricey or fooked on Ebay.

Not that I've got the dosh at the mo. :( :(

Ditto. That and I currently have

80m of waterproof forest green fabric for roof.
17 closed cell sleeping mats.
New set of head light bowls.
New set of headlights with side lights inc.
2 rear seats to fit.
Set of modular wheels to shot last and paint.
Set of tyres to fit to them.

Ain't got time to do anything

Kai and I have started to practice welding. Been at it off and on for a little over a year. The gasless mig is OK but the results are a bit dodgy. Strangely... Kai seems to get a much better result from the arc welder that was donated to him when he turned 12... it's a decent one and I think that makes all the difference.

We still get some crappy results.... but hey ho... once in a while we get a good one too!

That site in Redhand's signature has some really good stuff on it.
