Just read spees mot thread and i've got the same problem as spee and moneypit. I can poke my finger up through the metal, directly above the tyre on the joint between metal and plastic (but only on the air filter side).

My rear wheel arches arn't too good neither. It looks fine until i open the back doors (same on both sides). Its very rusty on the outer edge and you could poke a small screwdriver through the top inner corner.

Questions:
1) I'm thinking of investing in a new front inner wing. I'm not a welder, but know several people who are. Is this a big job? Also, i'm near mid cornwall 4x4 (a landrover specialist), would it be better to take it to them? and how much ££? (roughly)

2) Can you get new rear inner wheel arches or it is a case of just patching them up? And is this a big job?

Does this make sense? i'm still learning all the mechanical lingo!

Advice would be appreciated, cheers

When I had my sills welded, I did all the prp work and a local old fella did the welding, leaving me to do the painting afterwards.

Now, I'm not exactly compatant with the spanners, but it may help, (as in make it cheaper for you), if you did the prep, (cutting out the old metal), and the painting afterwards.

By the sounds of it, all your rust is in areas that need'nt be painted proffesionally, and would do with just a bit of Karust, followed by a couple of coats of Hammorite.

These Land Rover specialists tend to charge specialists prices. Why not take yours round to a few back street welding places near you and get some quotes? Maybe someone on here can reccomend somewhere that close to you. If not on here, then maybe some other car forum, or someone from your local LR or Off-Road club?

By doing the prep work yourself, and the painting afterwards, your proberly cutting your bill in half. Invest £20 in an angle grinder, get yourself a mask and thick welding gloves and get cracking. Just make sure that you are able to actually drive yours to where-ever is actually welding it.

Although, by the sounds of it, if your rear arches need doing, then I'm going to guess that the boot floor will too?

The boot floor is ok for the moment, i recently pressure washed and waxoyled underneath so i'm hoping it will be ok for a year or so. Good point about doing prep work myself, got the argos book out looking at angle grinders!

Also, it will probably be next year, but getting muddy with the SLAPPERS sounds like great fun!

Here is a couple of pics of the inner wing rebuilding on Tufftee. No where near finished tho - but at first fit stage :) - if it helps ya.

Interesting photos! Has anybody had any experience repairing rear wheel arches? Do you just patch it up or is it a big job?
 
As with all things it depends where the problem is and how large the tin worm was.

I'm no master welder but I have successfully patch repaired both front inner wings, both cills, bottom of A post, rear arches and bits of floor. If you can use a MIG welder or even an arc welder you should be alright. An angle grinder is an absolute must, a dremel is a handy addition.

If you do it yourself dont forget to disconnect your battery before you start welding.

"garage gas" to you poor unfortunates that cannot understand lz speak. Fur thoze tha canna understumble tha - its a mix of argon, carbon dioxide and oxygen and i fink its so yu can have a sniff evry now an agin to keep yu happy wen finks r goin rong wen welderyfying.

oh and if you get it from adams gas be carefull as they are known to send a bottle of pure argon from time to time - first time they did i thought me welder wuz broke
 
erm - no - i gorrit from Bstoke welding supplies for wot, i thought, werent a bad price - £40 for 3 years rental, £22.50 for the gas, VAT and deposit of £25.75, making a total of £99.18. less than a ton, which is best around here.

but i bet in Trago its 3/4d;).
 
well i used to use BOC till they started playing silly buggers and charging whatever they felt - adams charge about the same £40 deposit for the bottle and £54 for a refill - and they fill it to 200 psi whereas most seem only to fill it to 100

have you gorra twin guage on yours ?

9.4L bottle apparently
