Ok I have searched, but I cant find anything, so excuse me if this is another "ffs stupid twot" question!
I have need to do loads of welding on my disco 1's chassis (surprise!) and have been told that I need to disconnect the electrics so as not to fry 'em. Mensioned was the ECU. (Brace for a big DURRRRR!:doh Where is the ECU on a 94 disco 300tdi? and is there anything else that needs disconnecting? or is this all bullsh*t?:dnfnoob:

All you have to do is disconnect the battery or fit a surge protector to the positive and negative terminals to carry out any welding without burning out electrics.

i am not saying its not possible but i never had a problem in 20 years place earth connector near welding area

I have not had a problem yet with disconnecting the battery before welding,as James says,get your earth close to the weld site then the charge will follow the most direct route to earth.I have taken to grinding a clean earth spot very close to the weld site and using a magnet to attach the earth if there is no good metal to clip to immediately adjacent.The book says that some of the ECUs need to be re-initialised by testbook after being disconnected.Im sure there a ways around this but I would rather not go looking for trouble.

well, thats cheered me up! cheers guys I was set up for more doom and gloom! but thats cool. i would always situate the clamp near the weld anyway cos i just seems logical to get the best shortest circuit. and disconnecting the battery as well. fhew! thought that was gona be worse. Cheers to all!

Never had a problem welding probably hundreds of different cars, the very most I ever disconected was the battery -ve but that was years ago. Now with coded radios and everything that needs reset I dont bother, a good earth and dont try to weld wiring and youll be fine. Even weld exhausts with the engine running....tiz easy to hear when the holes gone then
