Well I've finally got my springs on and welded up most of the holes in my chassis but now I've got a dead alternator. I disconnected the battery and thought that was the way to go but obviously not.

What do you guys do when you're welding?

I don't even do that
All modern largeish welders have surge protection built into them
But for all others then either disconnect the battery leads or you can get a spike catcher that goes across the battery
Been welding for years and never had a problem touch wood

my standard procedure with any vehicle is to remove the battery completely and put the battery live cable in an old rubber glove or in the gubbinz out of an old football to make sure it dont touch the chassis while im watching what im doing and i always put me earth clamp within a yard distance from whatever im welding for 2 reasons

1 the circuit on the welder will be short as possible so shouldnt go through anything but what im welding ( lecci always goes the shortest distance it can )

2 the shorter the welder circuit the better itll weld

Cheers lads,

Mmm, well I'd disconnected mine (like the red notice says on the motor!).

The earth clamp was to the nicely cleaned up shocker pin less than a foot from where I was welding. I'll double check, with a bit of luck it might be some disturbed wiring. To be honest in the ****ing rain and dark at midnight last night I couldn't see anything amiss...

could be a bit of **** or damp in the plug on the back of the alternator

Or it could be the oily rag that I was wiping the muck off the wing that I threw over the radiator try dry that had wrapped itself round the fan and knocked the belt off...I truly am a dozy ****witt!

sounds a bit like my recent ****up

fitted new wiring loom wired it all up brand new starter motor refurbed the alternator new battery tested the wiring all ok till i got to the last test

turned the key the starter motor worked turned the engine over

and sucked the ****ing rubber glove i was using to keep **** out of the engine into the intake manifold causing me to have the lovely job of stripping it off again

Easily done, I'm forever forgetting to put the intake hose back on the air-cleaner. Did it the other week and noticed it after a few days...couldn't find my little torch for ages and the choke was playing up.....yup! Dickhead!

Got a fancy head, cam and followers coming this week...wonder what sort of a feck up I can make of that lot!
