Yes, what usually happens is that they let the apprentice play with your car and he/she usually forgets to put the bolts back in or tighten them up properly.
No big deal, quite normal in this day and age for garages to do a worse job than the average home mechanic.

I would be looking at filing a suit against them for damages and compensation!!!
If they are an MOT garage then VOSA obviously needs to know how shoddy they are too as they are supposedly ensuring the road worthiness of our vehicles.
Thanks, there was a noise we stopped the engine instantly hazzerds on, I popped the bonnet found the auxiliary belt loose then to my shock, could see the bloody water pump in the bottom of the engine all coolent dumped instantly. Impellers smashed off the pump but bearings smooth????

Spot on there mate , would thought though with any apprentice someone would have checked his work, regardless though a moron who ever done it
Just had a look at a pic when my water pump was changed , the shiny bit,lol, wonder if they mistake water pump bolts for the timing cover bolts, but water pump bolts are surely outside the cover
Only the first pic is mine , lol
Think like all of us inc the OP of how shocking that is to leave it loose, surely water would have been ****ing out at the garage seeing it just fell off

Imagine they do at some stage , however I would expect under very close supervision , until such times they learn enough and an experienced mechanic signs them off as competent
Must admit I would never attempt to replace the timing belts on mine , know my limit or a single mistake would mean £5k for a new engine as it self distructs
When you're stretched tighter than a set of sheer nylons over Dianne Abbott's chunder thighs, you'll let the apprentice snort coke off the rocker cover if he promises to put a £2 gasket on it so you can bill the client £200
You should ask @Henry_b what apprentice "should" do Vs what they are actually asked to do and the work that gets done via them.
