Hi All,

D2 TD5 2000 plate.

Is it worth swapping out the water pump and stat as a matter of course/preventative maintenance?

I know it is a fairly big job given there isn't an immediate fault, but I need to invest some time and money into the old girl to breathe a bit of life into her.

If you do decide to do it,

Then invest in a pair of the pipe clip pliers designed for the clips used by LR on the water pipes.

Certainly won't hurt if you have any suspicions.

I have read a lot about the factory temperature gauge being only useful to actually tell you you've cooked the engine as it has no relation to actual engine temperature, perhaps an aftermarket gauge and sender would also be an investment?

Something like this.

It will give you an accurate reading of what is actually going on in the engine before it cooks itself.

This is what I have, there are probably better ones out there if you look.

All kits come with easy and clear instructions, fit in an hour including a brew break.

Put it in one of these.

I just fitted an oil pressure gauge and boost gauge on my own truck, installation was tidy enough, this is it mocked up on the kitchen side.

I mounted the pod on a plinth made of 25x25x25mm ally C section, used the plinth to space it from the dash as there is a flexible boost pipe that I didn't want to risk kinking but a simple cable installation wouldn't need spacing as the cables can be easily tucked up out the way, I am still waiting for my voltmeter with battery indicator lamp to come for the third position in the pod that will be for the second alternator installation on my truck.

For the coolant temp sensor the easyest i found is to remove, drill and cut thread in the elbow so no other adaptor implied, most of thoe sensors are 1/8npt

If you mean the auxiliary drive belt, as @neilly asked, it's quite easy to do provided you have the correct spanner set to get the viscous fan off, for example:-

They are quite lumpy items so the price of around 20 to 25 quid is quite reasonable.
The job is just about do-able without removing the fan from what I've seen, but it'll be an absolute pig to do it without the spanners.
When I last changed the belt it took me longer to get the tools out and put them away again than actually doing the job.
Most people would advise you to replace the belt tensioner while you're doing the belt. They're about 25 quid and it's just a single bolt to remove and replace.
