Hi lads and lasses, anyone out there any advice the amber engine warning light has come on on my 2001 freelander 1.8 petrol. The handbook as always is vague. It reckons if it comes on and the car drives normally its OK to drive. Is it OK to drive and for how long, oil and coolant levels are fine, no leaks. Is this something I need take immediate action or is this a '' time for the dealer to make money'' light. Cheers
 
In case you are still experiencing this issue.
The ABS, TC & HDC system are all controlled by the ABS modulator ECU. It requires feedback from the wheel speed sensors i.e measures wheel speed delta (difference in wheel speed), and for HDC, gear position. If the instrument pack warning lamps are illuminated, you have no option but to take it to a garage that has Testbook or T4 or 1.8 petrol engine diagnostics. This will cost you as the dealership/garage will charge for investigation, and if you agree rectification. The system is inactive if warning light are illuminated. i.e you have no ABS, TC or HDC active, drive carefully. Does the vehicle speed show the correct speed of the vehicle ? if so then the wheel speed sensors may be ok, this will need to be confirmed via diagnostics. Please let me know the outcome. Regards. hi Adam, cheers for that, but its not all the lights its just the amber coloured one shaped like an engine, as I say the handbook says you can drive it if it is driving normally, which it is, and arrange a service. I was just wondering if anyone can tell me if its something that needs urgent attention or if I can still drive for a while before shelling out for a service. Is is driving perfectly normally and I've checked oil and coolant and they are OK.

fuel filter ,furst, could be low fuel pressure . . .then if its still on git er t4 test diagnostics. . . .:)
 
Engine malfunction indicator - AMBER (Petrol
models)
Illuminates as a bulb check when
the starter switch is turned to
position ‘II’ and extinguishes when
the engine is started. If the light illuminates
while the engine is running, this indicates the
detection of an emissions fault by the engine
management system.
If the light illuminates and the vehicle drives
normally:
•Contact a dealer to arrange a service
appointment at your earliest convenience -
you may still drive the vehicle.
If the light flashes and/or the vehicle does not
drive normally:
•Avoid high speeds and seek immediate
assistance from your dealer.

:) Getting used to the quirks of the freelander. Sat morning was just about to start checking stuff, the better half wanted to nip out, stalled reversing off the drive. Lo and behold no more warning light!!!! Amazing. Its booked in for a service in a couple of weeks so I'll see what they say then. Thanks for everybodies kind suggestions. Cheers

Mine came on tonight and stayed on after engine reboot so I'm suspecting my blowing ehaust as the culprit thats corrupting my system.

It's my favourite Dinasour, it lives it in 2nd & 3rd but it so lazy when shifted to higher gears. It's sluggish slow to respond in drive.

It's faithful and true, never let me down once and I live on a big hill. I thought I put 'bill' then; must be my eyes. I'm looking forward to getting middle and back box sorted in the near future and get my iblutions in order before the bill becomes an astronomical trip.

Any hows landies, I know its 7 yrs ago but hey: Oh for the wonderment of timelessness. I enjoyed your question (oops, shoulda looked at your before replying, soz) And, I enjoyed the varied responses and attitudes. I'll let you know if old Dino makes it x
