Sounds like a lack of lubrication allowing it to rot.
Certainly dont want it falling off

Most folk seem to report Bilsteins are too harsh (Henry excepted), but probably depends on the kind of conditions you are going to drive. My Monroe's work well, gas filled, black. I definitely wdn't describe them as harsh (tho my reference for harsh is a Defender, using TF shocks)

There’s always an exception.
Nearly always Enery :p
Gotta love him though he’s good as gold.

There is no harsh when you’ve driven defender, bed of nails is ‘fairly comfy bit twitchy on the bends’ in comparison

He's in the driving seat. The rear seat is a different experience. I found Terrafirma very harsh in the front. Britpart fell apart, least said there the better. Not tried Bilstein or Monroe. The missus thinks Boge is bouncy in the back but I like them from the front seat!

Having trawled the threads on this I did see someone suggest firming up the rear and leaving the front as is - which fits with Grr's wife's experience and makes sense to me. I certainly wdn't want firmer at the front
