1 May 08 it arrived, a pretty blue Disco, 97R 300TDi with 120K miles, new MoT and 8 years history from its last owner, the car that should mean I never again have to get a Landy driver to pull my horse trailer off wet grass that defeated the Volvo. After years of 740 and 940 estates, the current one, 94L 940 turbo auto, 207K, needs tyres, exhaust and a new engine. The time had come...
 
Thanks Daz, I hope so - it seems a big step away from Volvo! Four days and still only 120 miles since collecting it, it's still quite pristine (not counting the odd minor bubble under the bonnet and tailgate paint...) but it'll be fun getting muddy without fear of getting stuck. Forgot to say it's an ES, all leather, bells and whistles, probably not at all right to get mud INSIDE it.
 
you will love it mate, im also a volvo fan, after 6 years of v40 diesel ownership, and only ever having it serviced and putting fuel in all that time, i was dubious about buying my 2000 p38 vouge last week! however, how much of a good move was that! stikll not moved the volvo on yet though, who knows?
 
am feeling the opposite at the minute. got a peugeot for 10 years, a volvo 460 for 4 yrs( gave 2 brother last year), renault traffic and wife gave her mondeo ztec to son after 3 yrs. but after having a freelander 3 month , i dont think i would ever have another again. i tow caravan through europe but would not contemplate it with a freelander.

That's a bloody freelander tho, sell it and get a proper Landy:D

No 'Swede alert'?? Better respected, clearly!!

If Volvo or Saab made something that could tow 2000kg, didn't get stuck in half an inch of mud, had the ground clearance of the Disco, and was available within my budget, there'd be no contest. I do like the Disco a lot (though I haven't had a service or repair bill yet!), but I guess I'd like it a lot more if it was Swedish!
 
Ok Cap'n, let's see your list of what is better about the Disco?

Mine:
Better
More than adequate towing capacity
Good ground clearance in bumpy gateway
No wheelspin pulling trailer on wet grass
'Cooler than the 940' (teenage daughter) :cool:

Worse
Interior space and storage
Build quality (bubbling paint, leaky windscreen)
Turning circle

Much the same so far
Fuel consumption, maybe 25p a mile in fuel only (but at least it's not dripping oil :))

BETTER
View of the road
Easier to get in and out of (back injury)
Towing (car trailer)
The kids get to see all the stuff over the hedgerows that they missed in a "normal" car
Higher roof in load area
Theoretically easier to fix :confused:
Greenlaning (the kids love it)

WORSE
Smaller load area
More noise on the road (might be due to rusty holes)
Speed when in a rush :eek:
Build quality (the Swedes have this sussed)
Turning circle

SAME
Fuel consumption (ish)
Not worrying about parking it at supermarkets etc LOL
Very similar on price of spare parts

Think thats it for now :p

Fret a lot more about trolley 'dings' on this as they'll probably rust a lot quicker than I'm used to. Nice being able to see it from a distance though!

We had an old J reg petrol RR for about 10 months, company car (with a fuel card!), about 15 years ago, and then their Disco for a few weeks, and I don't remember either of them being so awful to park. The firm's Transit van's better to take to Tesco. Maybe my Disco has an individual problem... or p'raps I was more flexible then!!

Neighbour with various Landies is looking forward to showing me what it can do. Still on its first tank of diesel... must get out more!
