Hi Guys,

Can someone confirm what size viscous spanner I need to remove it on a 4.6? Think its 32mm, but I got that from ebay so just want to check....

yep , thinking you're right . deffo fit's my classic and sure there all the same size . Ask wammers' , font of knowledge he is .

36mm might fit better. You can get tools with 36 one end and 32 the other. That will cover most vehicles.

Wow, thanks kieronf, what a useful vid.

So 36mm. I've only seen the spanners. Anyone know where I can find the 2 part tool?

Ah, according to a post from Irishrover, a few sharp taps will shift it so no need for a holding tool. Hmm. Bet mine won't be that easy.

When I first took my vicous fan off I tried for ages with the spanner and sharp crack method. Never worked. Fan kept slipping in the belt no matter what i jammed in there. I eventually got the largest (longest) cold chisel I had and one good chap with a hammer did the trick. Same in reverse for tightening it back up.

i never had a problem removing a viscus a long spanner and a hammer never failed me . i dont know about the petrol but oon the diesel its a reverse thread

As already stated a long (and sharp) cold chisel will always undo a viscous fan, i have never been beat by one yet and i used to look after a fleet of old shape Trannies and you had to take the fan off to do the timming belts, must have done hundreds.

Just to add to my above post with this method you dont need to hold the fan, just make sure you give a very hard and sharp strike, the chisel will maul the nut a bit but i promise you wont break anything.

Spanner on, sharp tap always works. Sharp tap with a small hammer is best. Cold chisel works, but a butchers tool.

I've never tried it, but a guy from a LR dealership told me that if you attach a spanner/socket to the belt tensioner, up the tension and whack the coupling nut - it works....

For what its worth, can't see it myself as the viscous coupling isn't held firm by belt tension

and don't forget the thread is usuallly left handed?? so don't be tightening it up when ya thionk ya loosening it...
