Could someone please help me; I am unsure how to remove the viscous fan - I have got the right sized spanner but no matter what I do I cant manage to stop the fan from fan pulley from turning whilst I am trying to undo the nut. Is there are special way?

Many thanks for any help :)

Thanks datatek, I thought it was left hand thread but I was searching the forum before I posted my question and it had a post saying that it was a normal hand thread..... now I am unsure..... Wondering if it differs between Thor and Gems...??

if you put a big screwdriver between the two bolts on water pump, you should be able to stop the fan from spinning as you undo fan.

According to Rave, the Viscous coupling is a RH thread (Sect 26 Cooling System). I think Irish also said it was a RH thread and he's the man;)

That would depend whether the motor was a V8 or a BMW diesel R/H V8, L/H BMW.

I was told that if you look at the fan from the top, the way the blades are pointing - towards you and left (drivers side) on my engine - is the way to hit the spanner!

Mines a V8 RHD - still not got the fan off yet as I dont have a long enough screwdriver to hold the water pump pulley in place.

get a long bit of metal to use as a drift and give it a good tap then it should undo... couldnt shift mine until it had a whack..

Aha so you did wammers! I had missed that one - sorry. Direction = minor detail really ;)

Yeah sorry about that, mines a diesel you see. Can't think why anyone would have anything else. Not rocket science to look which direction fans turns and undo in same direction.:).

So after reading all that, I still can't get the friggin' fan unit off -

300Tdi and I made a tool to lock up the water pump pully and the whole belt slips when I tw*t it with a hammer.

Two questions -

Which way should I be tw*tting the spanner (I assume to the right:rolleyes:)

Where do I go if it won't come off:confused:

Cheers all

Rob

All viscous fans undo in the same direction that they turn.
